Roses are Red – Conversations
Release Date: September 21, 2004
Record Label: Trustkill

Roses are Red is a four piece rock outfit on Trustkill records. Their latest effort, Conversations, is a combination of pop and hardcore…but mostly pop. The album is well produced, features excellent vocal harmonies, and presents the listener with straight-forward rock beats that are just quirky enough to keep your attention. The opener, “White and Gold” is full of cheery hooks and neat guitar licks to keep you interested. Sadly, this is how most of the songs sound. “Oceans” provides a nifty little bells effect that sets the track apart from the rest, but these effects disappear as the song progresses and slips into yet another hook-oriented chorus with dual layered vocal harmonies.

While the album is well produced, it’s a bit much at times. Every song is almost dripping with production, and every scream and chorus is blended together so that nothing stands alone. The choruses all sound alike. A pause in the action comes with an interlude, but the album returns to the same old formula soon after.

I really enjoy the instrumentation on this album, but it’s all been done before. In a day and age where there are thousands of bands creating this exact same type of music, a band must find something to stand out from the pack. Even though Roses are Red does the genre justice, they don’t have the X factor to set them apart. This is easily one of the poppiest bands I’ve ever heard on Trustkill. Of course, fans of the “screamo” genre will probably really enjoy this release. A worthy effort, but a burned out sound.

I liked the first two tracks because they reminded me of The Higher.

I didn't like the rest, however.

Good review.
