View Full Version : Borders to quit selling DVD and CD's, offering big discounts

So I got an email the other day from my borders account announcing that they were selling all DVD's and CD's for 50% off. I looked into it a little further and found out they're getting out of that business for good and that the sale would go on until everything is gone. At 50% Borders is still a little higher then WalMart and Target, but they carry many hard to find titles, cartoons and international releases, so it still might be a good deal.
Below is comment I found on a site saying that the discount will get even deep as time goes on.....not sure how true the pricing list is.
Hello, I am a Borders employee in Massachusetts and I'm sharing some news with you. If you've traveled into your local Borders this past weekend and noticed yellow signs everywhere indicating 30% off DVDs and CDs, you may have thought that was excellent. But then again our prices have always been a little high, so it's probably bringing it down to the same price as Amazon/Best Buy now.
Well hang in there. Over the next 7 week period most Borders are getting rid of 75% of their CDs and DVDs to pretty much get rid of the section, due to the economy and poor sales. To my understanding they will still be carrying the "top sellers" from that point on. But during the 7 week period I've been informed that the clearance prices will gradually rise from 30%, 40%, 50%, 75% and then FINALLY $1 to get everything else out the door.
They did this similar thing with all the calendars at the beginning of the year. But this is much bigger than calendars! So just a heads up if you happen to be in Borders, wait at least another week until the prices start to drop more.

Their prices were always so high for DVDs, it was a bit ridiculous.

You've go to be shitting me. I just went there to get coffee with a friend yesterday and noticed their CD collection was quite good, although pricey.
I have a 20 dollar giftcar for Borders, need to find a store I guess.

I have a giftcard leftover from Chirstmas. Hell yes.

That sucks. They were the only place by me where I could order Razia's Shadow. Bummer.

I'm going to wait another week or two, 50% of MSRP isn't that great, but 60 or 75% is....and the thought of even getting shitty movies new for a $1, is just dream worthy.

This. Borders prices aren't that bad, they issue a 30 or 40% coupon like every week.

Border's price for blu-ray usually cost around 40 bucks, so even at a good sale of 50% I'd still be paying 20 bucks. But, I'll at least check out the sales.

I will be keeping an eye out at the three local Border's, I'm sure I will be able to get some lesser known CDs & DVDs that I've wanted to get for quite cheap. That $1.00 sounds to good to be true.

Good. B&N also over prices their media.

I went there the other day and all CDs were 40% off. I will wait a bit to binge because there are a ton of Bob Dylan records I want to pick up.
The DVD's were marked down the same amount as well but only for certain ones. Pretty much all the trashy ones. Hopefully they give the markdowns to some of the TV Sets.

Same. 40% off CDs/DVDs yesterday. About a month ago I went to a Borders with 50% off, I guess my hypothesis proved true.
I wonder what they're going to do with the extra space, their book selection is thinning as well...

When is the next price drop? Is each store different or what?

04/04/09, 07:27 PM
I've got two stores right by me, one has fifty percent off all CD's and DVD's, and the other is at 40% on DVD's and 50% on CD's....so I guess the pricing just depends on where you live/go.

Just went and like 5% of the shittiest movies there had a red sticker on them which meant 40% off, and even those were still cheaper on amazon. The rest were still regular price. Hopefully another week or two will make this worthwhile.

interesting. I'll have to check this out.

Make sure you use it. My brother had at least $30 of gift vouchers for a CD store chain here in New Zealand that he held for A WHOLE YEAR, and then the CD store went bankrupt.
I'll go mock him on his Facebook about it now, actually.

yeah it was the same for me, only the only CD I found that was discounted that I would want was Circa Survive Jutrana and I already have that record.

I planned on going to Borders anyway, so I have more reason to go.

I agree. I saw the Burn Notice season 1 DVD boxset for a little more than $50, and if I remember correctly, there's only 13 episodes on there. Blah.
There a few good bargains for $6.99, 9.99, 12.99 and 14.99, but those are for older movies.

I went earlier today and wasn't very impressed with the selection that was 50% off. Pretty much everything I wanted was full price or not there so I was kinda disappointed.
I picked up Chasing Amy for $7.50 though so that would be pretty cool if I wasn't buying it for the second time because someone never returned it to me.

Mine had 50% off signs everywhere but the fine print said it had to have a red sticker on it. None of the CD's had a red sticker? I should have asked someone but didn't. Not sure what I'm missing.

They must all have different sales going on, the two border's by my house are alread completely sold out of DVD and most CD's. There was no red stickers or anything, just a straight 50%, which at Border's regular price wasn't always a good deal. I didn't get anything but my daughter got a few cheap Nick DVD's.

We just had red stickers. And only two bins full at that. Not worth it at all.
Ours has been at 50% w/ red stickers for a couple of weeks. Got a few new CDs then but I'm impatiently waiting for the percentage to progress higher before I buy any DVDs.

I work at borders. Some stores are "red tag stores" others are all out doing away with multimedia. The sale ends tonight officially so anyone holding out for the sale to get crazier are going to miss out 50% is the lowest. However in my email today corporate instructed us to honor the sale til tuesday even though all signage will be taken down. We were also instructed to have all multimedia off the floor by tuesday for the new store remodeling. So if you still wanna grab some deals Id suggest going in tomorrow morning. I dont think a lot of people are even aware of the sale. We still have a huge selection.
