Building the State - Faces in the Architecture EP

Coming out of Gainesville, Florida, Building the State owe much of their sound to the instrumental greats Explosions in the Sky and God Is an Astronaut. Employing a similar style musically, Faces in the Architecture is extremely melodic and spacey, yet Building the State also make use of sparse indie rock vocals to craft their own blend of ambient indie rock.
The first track, “Untitled IV”, introduces you to Building the State’s sound, and if you’re a fan of the two bands mentioned above you’ll feel right at home. The vocals kick in around the 45 second mark, and for a lack of a better comparison are somewhat like Nicolas Torres of Northstar – calmly delivered but ripe with passion. “Intent on Harm” follows at a slower pace, and the guitar and drum work really had me thinking of Circa Survive. “Untitled II”, the only instrumental track on the EP, begins with more of an indie rock sound, and builds for a few minutes but quickly fades out before really reaching its’ peak. After this psych-out ending, Building the State bring back the melodic jam from the beginning of the track, giving the song a sense of wholeness and an enjoyable ending. “Open Hands to the Sky” begins with an atmospheric jam session, then transitions into a slower paced vocal led section. This final track features some extremely morose lyrics, “cry, cry, our culture is dead”, and builds quickly to finish off Faces in the Architecture with a heavier melodic jam.
Building the State combine spacey instrumentals with indie rock vocals to make Faces in the Architecture a very enjoyable listening experience. The songs are free flowing and don’t adhere to traditional song structure, so although the CD times in around 20 minutes, you’ll find yourself hitting the repeat button and enjoying this release for hours.
