Price for PS3 Finally Announced.

$300-400. All the xbox fanatics who shouted claims of $600 price range may now sit down quietly.


Sony's CEO, Sir Howard Stringer, said recently that Sony will sell the PS3 at a loss in order to populate the world with Sony's favored high-definition DVD standard, known as Blu-ray. If millions of Blu-ray PlayStations find their way into living rooms, Sony figures, movie studios will be compelled to embrace it over the rival standard, known as HD-DVD. Yes, brace yourself for another Betamax vs. VHS standards war.

Sir Howard said the PS3 will sell for $300 to $400 and will come with a bundle of games, movies, and TV shows, many of which Sony also makes. The question is whether the titles will be bundled on Blu-ray DVD discs or on a built-in hard drive.

Because the first standalone Blu-ray DVD players are expected to cost $1,000 or so, Sony is essentially giving a free next-generation DVD player to every PS3 customer. That eases the pain (a little bit) for people faced with buying new, high-def versions of their favorite DVDs.

This gives the PS3 a big edge in my opinion, since the price was the main criticism of it. Now that it's the same (maybe less) than the xbox...oh man.

Microsoft doesn't make any more profit off consoles sold on eBay, so that is not a benefit for them at all, besides the possible "hype" factor it creates. Most consoles have that at launch, anyways. There are lines at every console launch. Have been for 10 years. There are many xbox360s available. Some on eBay, as you mentioned.

I think that in the end Sony will rise to the top. However, this pricing made some sense. In my eyes with all the stuff I've heard it will be able to do, 400 is a Godsend. That's even going on the cheap side. If it really is a Bluray DVD player(which it is) they could easily ask 600 if they really wanted. And here's the thing... PEOPLE WILL BUY IT. It doesn't matter how much a console is at launch, if it's the new thing, people will buy it.

Also, about the FF7 remake remark... it's definately a possiblity. Let's just say a certain rep let something slip to lead me to believe that it really does/will exist. Plus read all the interviews. The way that the original producers avoid the questions with misdirection... to me, it's a pretty good sign that it's a secret project. Plus, why else would you spend months on something that would just show off capabilities. If it had been a shorter movie, I guess I could see it, but that was a good portion of the opener. I have high hopes and won't be surprised by this.

No, that was totally intentional to create the "buzz" and such. They scaled back production so that this would happen...
It was because they went with a worldwide launch, they didn't have enough to sell. They would've put a LOT more systems out there because they realize that the buzz will die down in a few months, and Christmas is the time to sell more units.

what? i pointed out that sony CAN'T take big losses cause they're in some financial trouble, sure it would be cool if they went ahead and ran themselves into the ground to give everyone ps3's on the cheap, but that would be suicidal on they're part, and bad for everybody else in the long run to.

I'm not re-buying any of my 300 DVDS; so who fucking cares about the blu-ray player. I care about one thing: How well FIFA plays on it, and what FIFA looks like/plays like compared to my PS2 FiFa games.

You should try Pro Evolution Soccer 5 (or the newest Winning Eleven game), its so much better than fifa.

Also how much do you guys rejon the PS3 will cost over here in the UK?
