a dictionary sits
on a brown desk with a bright lamp
scratches on its cover, graffiti marring the words
words on the inside, and the out. beautiful gold words
“Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary”
and words, not as beautiful
rodent
constraint
costume
war
monster
a chain is attached to the book with all the words
but all the words this chain knows
manacle, constrain
thief and steal, and maybe purloined
it speaks of poverty, suspicion, even inequality
the chain leads to the ground
a mouse in tow
the mouse sees the words on the chain and adds its own
pilfer and burrow and filch
but also hunger, mistrust
this mouse scurries away
passes the foot of a man
in a suit
a black suit, with gray stripes running up his leg, his waist, his arm
the suit speaks of misgiving, sullenness, resentment.
resentment towards the mouse,
and the chain, but not from the suit,
from the clock, which in the pocket of the suit
looks longingly out the hole where the button is supposed to go
seeing the words as it passes by
time, moment, occasion
waiting for his chain to be pulled
…
…
it finally is
by a man in a black sweatshirt
the suit keeps going
the words pass by again
occasion,
moment, time,
mistrust hunger filch
burrow pilfer inequality
suspicion poverty
purloinedthiefstealconstrainmanacle monsterwarcostumeconstraintrodent
