Hey there, Mike and Andrew.
Mike: Hey what's up Darren, thanks for taking the time out in doing
this.
No problem, thank you. Alright, so give us a quick history on how A Late Design came
to be.
Andrew: A Late Design started April of 2004. Sean and I put out an ad
searching for singer and Mike responded.
Mike: Then soon after a few unfortunate replacements we got our two
Long Island guys John and Josh. So we've been together as a band for
about a year now.
Where did the name "A Late Design" come from?
Andrew: The name has no meaning. Sean and I wanted to use the word
design because it sounded good. Later on that same night Sean called
me up and said how about A Late Design. I told him that name was sick
and we should use it.
Mike: What we usually do is tell people that the name came from a
design of a WWI submarine and the story goes like this. The navy had a
hard time designing the submarine. The torpedo's of the submarine were
getting stuck in the chambers and were not launching correctly, causing
many malfunction. Due to the malfunctions the submarine would sink and
it would be too late for war. So the last design that the navy used was
called project A Late Design and that's how we got our name.
Who are your major influences?
Mike: We are influenced by many artists/ bands. The bands I guess
influence us the most have to be Weezer, The Cure, Ben Folds, The Smiths,
Black Sabbith, Gorilla Biscuits, Jeff Buckley, Alkaline Trio,
Thrice, Coheed & Cambria.
Andrew: We also do appreciate Doo wop/hip hop/ metal because that shit
is sick, like the Fugees & Dragonforce.
Doo-Wop, eh? I can see it in your music. Anyways, why did you guys decide to self-produce your EP?
Andrew: well we don't have a big budget to work with and because
everyone we talk to for help were too busy to help. So we took all the
money we had and decided to buy our own small studio. We took our songs
and try to make them the best as we can without losing that raw energy.
We also wanted the recording to represent us. We wanted to resemble
want we do live.
What was it like working with Anthony from Bayside on your EP?
Mike: Over time I've actually become a huge Bayside fan and respect a
lot of what Anthony does as a musician. He was very easy to work with
and just delivered everything so strong.
While on the subject of Bayside, I understand you're doing a
memorial show for John soon. What are the plans for the show?
Andrew: Yeah, we're putting on a show Thursday DEC 15th 2005 at Benjamin
Cardozo High School in Bayside, Queens (NY). The Bands that are
playing are The Sleeping, Action Action, A Late design & Anthony Raneri of
Bayside. There are more bands to be added. We're looking at Endwell or
The Junior Varsity to play. The cover charge is $10 at the door.
Overall were trying to raise as much money as we can to donate to John
Holohan's Family.
That's great... best of luck on that.
Mike: Thanks.
What was the best show you ever played?
Andrew: I think the best show we ever played was Bayside/ The
Sleeping/Action in long island @ Downtown in Jan 2005 because it was
sold out and it was like our 4th show. Overall, that show was so much
fun and meant so much to us.
Mike: I actually had a great time when we put on this show at
Scallywags. It was our first show with Josh and John and the five us
together just put on a great show. Josh busted my face open with his
bass and put me in the ER. That's just how we do it man! And when Sean
dived into John's drum set. We're just explosive!
What do you see happening with A Late Design in 2006?
Andrew: I really see good things happening in 2006. Not trying to sound
cliche, but we've just been working really hard and put our blood, sweat
and tears into this band.
Mike: And with hard work and determination I believe anyone will
succeed. We aren't pessimistic either. Optimism is key!
