The Color of Violence – Youthanize
Release Date: April 7, 2009
Record Label: Epitaph

No, this isn’t the “youthanize” the fake cable company in the DirecTV commercial brainstorms about. Rather this is Travis Richter and Derek Bloom’s (both of From First To Last fame), or should I say, Guy Nucleosity and Glitch Killgasm (their stage names), experimental side project. Guy shreds the guitar and his vocals, while Glitch rocks out from behind the kit. Together they create The Color of Violence and an album that never slows down. Youthanize is full of shrieks, noise, and rapid transitions.

Youthanize begins with their chaotic rendition of The Pixies’ “Rock Music.” The guitar riff crawls under your skin, as Richter screeches his way through the song. In fact, there is a lot of screeching. “Large Hardon Collider” hinges on the brink of grind, and could easily fit on one of The Number Twelve Looks Like You’s earlier albums. “God Gave Me Deeze Nutz” is a throwaway track, while “Me and My Enormous Spiritual Erection” showcase Bloom’s drum skills.

Basically, the first nine songs all clock in around two minutes and accomplish the same goal: to bash your head in repeatedly. “Christina, Christina” pierces and thrashes throughout, and “Create a Merkaba, and Get Me Outta Here!” tries its best to create melody. The final track, “Untitled” is actually pretty nice to listen, as it incorporates some electronic beats and creates a smooth groove.

Basically, in the end, Richter and Bloom just wanted to create and experiment. The Color of Violence sounds like two talented musicians who got bored in the studio. Youthanize isn’t bad musically, but Richter’s screeches are inaudible most of the time and hinder the album. Not to mention that Youthanize ends in a blink of an eye, and there isn’t much variation to draw listeners back in. It’s cool that Richter and Bloom just wanted to experiment and shoot the shit, but while Youthanize isn’t exactly terrible, it isn’t good either. It’s like a benign mole on your back, it’s just…there.

I disagree with the low rating, but decent review. I enjoyed this album, reminded me of Old FBTMOf + TN12LLY + Some Girls

I'm glad I read this before I bought it on Itunes. The reviews I read in Revolver and AP both gave it 4/5, comparing it to the blood brothers and converge. I'll still check this out but I'm not paying for it.

They have characteristics of Blood Brothers and Converge, but just not as good.

I think these two have a ton of talent but this record just doesn't do it for me. It all just mashes together. I totally agree that this is just an experiment and something they wanted to try out.

Dead meme is dead.

Album is good if you want just to want to hit something. Very much like ISMFOF in my opinion.

I downloaded this just for the hell of it, and Drew, your review is dead on, but I'm still kind of enjoying it in a guilty pleasure kind of way, idk. I don't think I'll be listening to it much or for very long, but it's a fun enough release, and I'm mildly enjoying it haha

I actually like this band. They have elements of Daughters and The Locust imo, especially in the way the songs are structured. Just a guilty pleasure I suppose.

The Revolver and AP reviews are much more accurate than this one.

I don't agree that it's a bad album at all, nor would I compare it to a mole on your back.

I definitely agree with this review. I like it and all, but it's so short and there's so little variation, there's not much to draw back in a first time listener. However, I'm not a first time listener so I'll be back lol

I totally agree with whoever posted that the album comes off as somewhere between the bands Daughters and The Locust. The Blood Brothers association is also a pretty good comparison. I'm listening to it for the 2nd time right now and it was definately worth the $10 I paid at my local record store. Better COV than shitty techno beats accompanied by high pitched whining (I'm lookin' at you Sonny).

The mole line made me laugh out loud. I still think that Bloom is a good drummer though.

Fair review. I never checked them out because of the FFTL stigma, but I just gave them a listen. Not bad, but I don't need a whole album of it.

Quick question... if PUOYRRG from TNTLLY is my favorite album, then will this do for me? I'd check youtube, but it's not working.
