View Full Version : Iraq thanks America, gives money for Katrina

The Red Crescent, an Iraqi organization similar to the American Red Cross, has given the US $1,000,000 for Katrina. They also claim they wish they could give us more money to thank us for what we are doing for them.

I find this interesting, since so many people like to say that Iraqis do not want us there and hate what we are doing. Keep in mind we have no influence in this organization... this is the Iraqis thanking us all by themselves. And giving us money for our own problems, no less.

The article: http://washingtontimes.com/world/20051124-103352-3163r.htm

Excerpt:

The sum, transferred by wire on Sunday, amounts to 20 percent of the organization's annual budget. "I wish we could have a billion dollars to give," Said Hakki, the organization's president, said by telephone from Baghdad. "Even then, it is not enough to show our appreciation for what the U.S. has done for Iraq and is still doing." The donation was made with the approval of the office of Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari and is thought to mark the first time that Iraq has sent aid to the United States.

I find this suprising. One of my good friends who's an Iraqi immigrant said the majority of his family and friends he talks to back home say a large majority don't support the USA occupation. I guess you'd have to be there to see yourself. I'm sure there's alot of support for both sides.

you don't have to support the occupation in order to help out those in need.

still doesn't justify us being there. I bet our government fronted them the money and said "pss, hey, give this back to us and pretend that you want us there or we'll kill you." Haha, not a bad conspiracy theory. I don't think this validates anything.

One example and one group in a nation of 26 million...

i'd say remember that the USSR citizens hated America too.........(sarcasm)

not saying this is neccesarily the case in Iraq, but it's not obviously out of the question.

My question is, what would it take for you to feel that it's validated? How many Iraqis will have to thank us or praise us or work with us before you feel that maybe we're doing something good?

I'm not saying you don't have good reasons for your feelings... I'm just curious as to what it would take to prove to you that we're helping.

I would say when normal Iraqi citizens stop becoming terrorits. That won't happen though because innocent Iraqi citizens keep dying every day and we are the reason they are dying.

i don't think the point was that because they gave money to aid americans it validates the war, i think the point is that these people that have more than their share of trouble at home donated money to help people in america.

it sucks for the non-terrorists, but what else can we do?

This is true.

That is true, but if you read the article, they speciically state that they wish they could do more to help us, because of how grateful they are for what we are doing in Iraq for them.

it's funny that we turned down money from other nations, but this couldn't be a political move, that wouldn't make sense......

looks like your more or less right here, we turned down aid from germany and israel among others in the initial response period, but now we're accepting everything, my bad.
