Couldn't find a thread with the search function, not surprising though. I don't imagine too many people listen to him.

Love Ire & Song was one of my favorite records from 2008. If you haven't given it a listen you should do so. Also, i saw yesterday that he is working on a new album that should be out by Septemberish.

Thoughts?

FUCK YES! Frank is a truely great story teller, lyricist and his performances are fast becoming the stuff of underground legends.

Woah. Seeing this thread just made my heart leap with excitement. I'm a Frank Turner devotee, and he is grossly underappreciated over here in the states. He's quickly becoming one of my favorite songwriters...

As previously stated, his storytelling/lyrics are top-notch. There's something about him. His voice, his words...It just hits me square in the chest.

I just wish he toured the states more. :-(

I am, actually! Although I'm admittedly a bit green as far as they're concerned. When I ordered The First Three Years from the U.K. label I picked up Harmony and they bundled it with a few extra singles.

I like the sound alot. One of my friends told me the earlier stuff was a bit more "hardcore." Any truth to this? I'll probably be checking the albums out either way.

Yeah, its not exactly the entire album, just a few songs "pornography for cowards" is a good example.

Lyrically i can't choose which i like better frank in million dead or frank by himself.

Just my opinion and I may be in the minority, but he really should have stayed in Million Dead. We do not need another fucking singer/songwriter. Yeah, yeah I know he's better than most, but good post-hardcore bands are a lot harder to find now.

I really don't know enough / haven't heard enough of Million Dead to make a judgement, but based on the fact that two people in this thread feel that way I'll have to give them more of a chance. I'll be looking into getting some of their stuff today.

That being said? One might make the same argument you made about post-hardcore bands in terms of singer/songwriters. Haha. ;-) Regardless, if you're into post-hardcore, have you heard Make Do and Mend?

His lyrics and vocals on A Song to Ruin and Harmony/No Harmony were soooo good. Some of the best lyrics in particular that post-hardcore has ever seen. For example

I've been listening to Million Dead since 2003 and was definitely their only US fan for quite awhile. When Frank started doing his solo stuff I was absolutely beyond stoked to hear Franks voice again! I never got to see Million Dead play a show, but I got to open up for Fake Problems and Frank Turner (Fake Turner - Frank Problems Tour!) back in October and it was life-changing. (He played an acoustic version of "Strangers Smiling on Trains' and dedicated it to me -- Million Dead fans know what's up on this one and youtube it if you don't! :-)).

Anyway, so yeah... I really pushed Love Song and Ire when it came out on this site and everyone knows I touted this forever as the best album of '08 (and for a reason!). It has the songs about death, love, and growing up ever written on it! I still hold true to that!!!

Frank is my hero.

Haha, so Ben is grabbing your glory huh. My favorite song is definitely "Photosynthesis" and after that i like "Long Live the Queen" "Reasons Not to Be an Idiot" and "I Knew Prufrock Before He Got Famous". I am really glad that he is getting some love from people on here because he is a fantastic song writer. I can't wait to see him this summer.

I just wish he would do a headlining tour of the U.S. so he would have a chance to play them live for me, dammit! :-| I'm sure the crowd at the Massachusetts show will be MORE than excited to see a singer-songwriter performing before the Offspring and Sum-41. THAT should go over well...

That'd be the song! Haha. It's great. And I believe I found it on that b-sides/live sessions site you just linked everyone too. Lots of good stuff on there! And I'm pretty sure that site also has a "sister site" with Million Dead rarities.

It's worth noting that I picked up The First Three Years from X-Tra Mile and they threw in some Million Dead singles as a bonus. :-) And it's pretty much an all-inclusive rarities compilation. My one beef? Lack of liner notes. And for someone who puts alot into his lyrics (and I've read full-blown explanations of all the songs on Love Ire & Song) that was a bit dissapointing.

Not that I'm trying to discourage you from picking up any Frank Turner stuff, but you won't have much luck getting his records in U.S. stores unless you happen to be near a record store that has an extremely well-stocked imports section.

The only releases that are readily and physically available in the states are Campfire Punk Rock and his split with Jonah. You can get Love Ire & Song via iTunes and eMusic, but your best bet is picking up his music on eBay, Amazon, or straight from the U.K. label (Xtra Mile Recordings (http://www.xtramilerecordings.com/)).

The latter appears to have added Frank Turner beer mats/coasters to their Web store that say "Get another round in at the bar." Clever, but nowhere near as awesome as A Wilhelm Scream's classic coozie lines ("I like booze, booze tastes good" and "I drink beer, I start shit").

from his official blog:

"Life takes some strange twists and turns. I feel like the sun is shining on me right now. As some people have already heard, last night I was able to put the finishing signature on a new record deal. Epitaph Records will be releasing both Love Ire & Song and any future releases in the world outside the UK.

Anyone with even a passing knowledge of punk rock will have some inkling of how fucking awesome this is. For many years (and this is pre-myspace) the Epitaph logo was a badge of quality that meant I would buy the record, regardless of what it was. In so doing I got into almost all my favourite punk bands. They're still one of the best labels in the world, and they're independent to boot. It's also really important to me that they've accommodated me staying with Xtra Mile in the UK - those guys are my family, and there's no way I was going to jump ship.

So yeah, this is a new beginning for me, internationally speaking. I'm in a good mood. Thanks are due to Charlie, Tony, Carolina and everyone at Epitaph, and all the people who've been supporting me and what I do for the past few years. Big love. I feel like Gwyneth Paltrow at the Oscars all of a sudden. I'll shut up."

Studio update! From the MySpace blog:

I sit at the table in the studio, absolutely stuffed to bursting. This is the first time I've been to residential studio, and I have to say that we're being looked after pretty damn well. Home cooked food every day is a luxury that is rare for me. And cheesecake? Man oh man. Time to work on a slow one.

Day 1 was spent with the tedious but necessary business of setting everything up and getting sounds. Because we're trying to record as much live as we can, that meant setting everything up at once. Alex and his assistant Dean beavered away with microphones, while I discovered, rather to my displeasure, that I fucking suck at table football. I'm well acquainted with the fact that I'm terrible at sport generally, but discovering that I'm also rubbish at a pub game was... gutting. It was even worse to discover that, for some unfathomable reason, Tarrant is really good at it. What?

Day 2, we started tracking. We have 5 days here, so we're pretty up against it time-wise, if we want to get all 12 of the songs I want on the album nailed. Thankfully a month of rehearsals, plus the fact that we're all totally boss musicians (haha), has paid off, and we motored through 5 songs in one day. This morning we got back into the fray and thusfar we've polished off another 3. Good going. We're recording to tape, which is new for me. It's quite scary when, every once in a while, Alex starts editing, which basically involves cutting the tape up with a de-magnetized razor blade. I get slightly edgy when I see him slashing through our recordings. Needless to say he know what he's doing.

It's all sounding great so far. I'm really pleased with the general vibe - this won't be the most precise of records, playing wise, but it has soul, which is something I feel a lot of records lack these days. It feels like we're making a worthwhile album. And I have been ever so slightly improving at table football. Victory will be mine.

Even though I'd much rather see him in a smaller venue, the opportunity to see him in a place this size won't come around again most likely, and I'm going to take pride in being one of the only people in that (massive) room to know who he is.

I really can't wait to see him, even if he is only going to play 5 or 6 songs. Two of my friends went to see him at the show that this blog was about and said he was great. After he preformed they talked with him for about 20 minutes and he signed something for them and took a picture. They said he was a really really nice guy, which i guess isn't new news.

I would think he could maybe fit more than 5 or 6 songs into a half-hour set. At least, I'm assuming that's the set-length that he's getting...

I'm also looking forward to picking up a t-shirt, some vinyl, and whatever else he may have for sale. Haha. Not too sure about talking to him, though. I'm never very good at that stuff. My two friends who went to this show said that the played 6 songs, although they didn't remember exactly which 6, they aren't the most musically inclined friends and they know about Frank because i showed them about a year ago. I am definitely going to be picking up a t-shirt and hopefully some hard copies of albums/vinyls. I would love to be able to talk to him, if i get the chance i am going to ask him about his new album and how the songs on it compare to his previous work. We don't need to wait until September for new music!

Also, as the storm clouds that are the new album continue to gather, I'm pleased to say I have some UK radio-related news. We've been told that the good Mr Zane Lowe will be broadcasting an exclusive first play of the new single, "The Road", on Monday July 13th on his BBC Radio 1 evening show (7-9pm). Please do listen in, and (if you like it, which I sincerely hope you do), let the good people at the BBC know all about it through the medium of text messaging / email. In the same week, the good Mr Mike Davies will also be playing some new stuff on his show too. Ears to the, er, radio, people!

Aaaand t-minus three days until I get to see him play live for the first time. Presumably...Leave work at 5. Get to my car at 6. Drive an hour to get to the venue by 7pm. Show starts at 7:30. Pray that I don't hit traffic...

If I miss Frank Turner and have to watch Sum-41, I'm'a be pissed.

The crowd response was decent, at first i was a little unsure about how they would respond but he is a very likable guy and he told a few stories and made jokes about why "a brit with an acoustic guitar is opening for bands like this" which i could tell the crowd enjoyed and found funny, i saw a fair amount of people buy his CD, so overall it was pretty good.

I don't see how you can even compare the two. That's like saying Hot Water Music is superior to Chuck Ragan, or Avail is superior to Tim Barry...They're completely different projects with (presumably) different goals, influences, and aspirations behind them.

It's apples and oranges, despite being the same singer/lyricist.

Point taken--and I wasn't saying anybody's wrong for preferring one over the other.

It just catches me off-guard when people try to compare an acoustic/folk singer-songwriter to their previous band. Mostly because stylistically (and often lyrically) the two are so blatantly different. I'd rather a band run its natural course, be happy with the records they did write/record, and let everyone move on than have something be forced.

I don't know. I guess maybe I'm just happy to take what I can get...I'd much prefer to have Hot Water Music, but I'm too happy that Chuck Ragan and Chris Wollard continue writing/playing music of their own to worry about it. At the end of the day--it's the same guys with the same attitude; I can say the same for Frank Turner, albeit with tuned down politics.

Sorry. That turned into a rant that wasn't at all directed at anybody, really.

Caught Frank opening for the Offspring the other night, and was extremely impressed. Mostly because the crowd was pretty responsive to him without much legwork on his end. By the end of the second song ("Back in the Day") people were clapping along, and seemingly getting into it. And people were actually paying attention to the words! When he sang: "In the end, at least you didn't try to fuck my friends" there was a collective "OOOH!" from the crowd.

It was weird, but awesome. Haha. The highlight of my Friday night...

i wrote frank turner a message on myspace and he replied. here it is in case anyone is interested, and this is proof that frank turner cares about his fans.

me:

"hey frank, i love your music and thanks for reading this. i have a question:

in "thatcher fucked the kids" you talk about how you generally support a welfare system. on your new album on "sons of liberty", you say that the government only ever works to its own benefit.

should i take this to mean that you still support a welfare system but just disagree with general encroachment on civil liberties? i definitely agree with that by the way, but i was also wondering that if not, have your opinions changed in the time between those two songs? i didn't feel there was enough clarification between those two positions if you believe both of them.

this seems kind of wordy, sorry. thank you for reading it and hopefully replying to it. i'm a big fan and i just bought your new album - it is very good, as i've come to expect from you

peace"

frank turner:

"hey kyle
thanks for the mail and the insightful question. my politics have shifted a little in the last 4 years or so, yes. i'm becoming more and more concerned with liberty as a political idea, and i'd describe myself as a libertarian these days. Thatcher is a cool song, and i stand by the sentiment, but it seems to me that the destruction of liberty as a concept by the Labour state is the most pressing issue right now.
hope yr well.

i wrote frank turner a message on myspace and he replied. here it is in case anyone is interested, and this is proof that frank turner cares about his fans.

Thatcher is a cool song, and i stand by the sentiment, but it seems to me that the destruction of liberty as a concept by the Labour state is the most pressing issue right now.
hope yr well.
ft"
That's really cool. Glad to see fame hasn't gone to his head.

Saw this dude with The Offspring at Starland Ballroom in Jersey

He may be a cool dude to chill with at a party but he claims to be so punk..

He got booed the entire time because he shouldn't have been there. Just terrible booking

He spends most of the time whining about his life..

If I'm gonna listen to some folk punk I choose Mischief Brew over Frank Turner any day.
Yeah, he deserves to be paying shows with better bands than The Offspring. Dickwit frat douches who booed him wouldn't know talent if it hit them in their pukka shell necklaces.

Also, he doesn't claim to be punk or even folk punk. He's said that he considers the term 'punk' to be a youth movement, and that to him it means nothing in terms of music (http://fancore.wordpress.com/category/frank-turner/) (http://fancore.wordpress.com/category/frank-turner/%29). He refers to himself a folk singer or, interestingly enough, a country singer.

He's better than any of the bands on that tour, i was at the show at Roseland Ballroom and i didn't hear any booing. I doubt Frank cares very much what Sum 41 and Offspring fans think of him

Plus with Jon and Todd on fiddle and pedal steel, from Chuck's band joining them!! I'm pretty sure i'm going to die with excitement the second they all hit the stage.

Uh, yeah, pretty much. There was a week or so, man, around mid-'08 when I was in to Turner's solo stuff, then I slowly grew tired of the self-important posturing of the lyrics. I continually felt like he was the "tellin' it like it is" guy, you know, the dude at the party who thinks that whatever sagely piece of insight on life is so unique and that he's such a straight-shooter for things like "yeah, some people aren't as unique and messed up as they would like to think. If you find something about his work interesting, then why wouldn't you try it? Why would you ask me?

Look, I'll use Vinh as an example. I like Vinh. He's a funny guy and a very good writer. He likes good music. If he recs something, because he and I like many of the same artists, I'll make it a point to try what he recommends. Often times, it pays off. However, Vinh likes some stuff that I don't and vise versa. If I read/hear something about an artist that piques my interest and I consider checking them out, I wouldn't let anyone stifle my curiosity. Only I decide what I like. So if Vinh says "[x] band you're considering check out sucks," that's swell, but that doesn't mean I'm going to let him make the decision of whether I think they suck.

So, I know you know all of that, but it bears mentioning. Who cares if I don't like him? Why would you ask me if you should still give Turner a go? Don't give me that kind of power over your tastes. Make up your own mind.

Rough set list?

Lets see, in no real order unless I noted it

I Knew Prufrock Before He Got Famous
Reasons Not to Be an Idiot
Photosynthesis
Substitute
To Take You Home
Long Live the Queen
The Ballad of Me and My Friends (Closer of regular set with him just standing in the crowd having everyone sing it back)
Try This At Home
Dan's Song (with Frank getting a super hammer guy to play the harmonica solo in the middle)
Poetry of the Deed
The Fastest Way Back Home
The Road
Faithful Son
Richard Divine
Plus two others
Encore was:
Back In The Day
Thunder Road

For the next to last song, he had all the bands come on stage to sing along, then said who wants to join my band? and half the crowd rushed the stage to sing along. It was beyond insane, Frank couldn't have been happier for it. It was also his first sold out American headlining show so it made it extra special

Yeah it was great, it added so much to the show and songs. The Architects also played, I think they are also on the Flogging Molly tour, they were pretty good too. I think he'll probably try to go back on a US headlining tour soon, since he has gathered such a big following and seemed to be having a blast. Throughout the first two bands he was just standing in the crowd just enjoying the night, which was pretty cool to see. If not I'm sure he'll try to jump on the next The Revival Tour
