Now I love Brand New and all, Jesse Lacey is one of my favorite musicians on the planet as a matter of fact, but I will say these two songs sound awfully similar lol.

Wouldn't surprise me. I hear the similarities, but...These things happen. If you listen to "Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows" and bits of Jawbreaker's "Accident Prone," you can hear some similarities (the choral riff in both songs, as well as the lyrics).
And Jesse plays that song when he plays solo too, sooo...Yeah. It happens.

it wouldn't surprise me if its accidental. i know he's cited kurt cobain as an influence, so its likely he listened to early foo fighters, having branched off from nirvana. interesting nonetheless.

it's two chords strummed in similar ways
not exactly copyright infringement

I'm sure it was accidental. Assuming that it was influenced by that song, I highly doubt that Jesse Lacey was hanging around and thought to himself: "I'm'a rip-off Dave Grohl!" Y'know? Stuff like this happens alot, and I almost always take it with a grain of salt--there's no real way to tell one way or the other.
But like you said - I think it's really interesting. I like knowing what inspires/influences songs, both lyrically and musically.

Not the exact same chord progression.
But I wasn't aware that two bands cant use the same chords in a song.
yeah, this isn't exactly like Finch's Ink to Gatsby's Counterfeit Language.

Just because they're being pointed out as similar doesn't mean it's necessarily a criticism. I kind of get a kick out of seeing where inspiration might be drawn from...

Lol, really? I mean, its the same chord on an acoustic song, but I could find plenty of songs that do this. Nothing is being ripped off. Plus, as a whole, the two songs sound nothing alike.

No...People can cover eachother, but if they don't get permission then it's copyright infringement...

Okay true, but at the same time take Coldplay for example. There was only ONE chord that was being replicated of the Joe Satriani song, but that doesn't make it any better

But when you listen to both of those songs, you can see similarities. When you listen to that Foo Fighters song, and then Welcome to Bankok, the two songs don't sound anything alike. The progression isn't even the same, and even the chord being "stolen" isn't exactly the same, it just has the same bass note, and a similar strumming pattern.

im not criticizing, i love brand new. i was just pointing out that they are common, and possibly connected. i wouldn't accuse jesse of deliberately ripping off foo's. they do sound similar, do they not?

Yea, it sounds similar. But I think it's more of a coincidence than anything. It's a real common chord:shrug:

If this counts as ripping a band off, then pop-punk is fucked.

Well, when your songs all consist of two or three chords, you're bound to rip someone off eventually.

Like I said before, I'm not accusing Jesse of purposefully copying the song. I just thought the two songs sounded very similar, that's all. I thought it was kinda funny.
Even the band will admit they somewhat ripped off another band. So what's the big deal?
