Do you like music that is catchy and fun but feel bored by the redundancy or lack of individuality in the pop-rock genre? Do you want the chance to enjoy one of the best albums of the year? Well great news folks, I’ve got just the band for you and for only 5 easy payments of $2.00, you can own their new self titled full length!
This Is Me Smiling have scrapped together a new release that is engaging, innovative, but still incredibly easy on the ears. Generally fast paced, the album has a buoyancy and a rhythm that’ll get you moving and keep your interest piqued. You can dance, shake your butt, or just smile and nod along while listening to this record; it’s really your choice. Either way, you’re going to enjoy this experience, I guarantee it.
Impressively, this refreshing young band have made a rock record with enough of an artistic and alternative influence to offer a variety of sounds and a delicious twist on a usually straight forward sound.
Some songs might at first appear to be along the lines of the upbeat pop rock tunes we all know and love, but before you know it This Is Me Smiling will throw you a musical curveball adding a whole new sunlight into their melodies. To be honest it’s hard to explain. It sounds indie, it sounds pop-rock, it sounds 70’s pop, it sounds fucking good. It’s such a luxury to be able to sigh in relief knowing there will be no migraine inducing, echoic, iterant, recycling of generic sounds. Instead we’ve got keyboards, we’ve got female vocals, we’ve got doo-wop, we’ve got symbols, we’ve got synthesizers, we’ve got harmonies to blow your mind, we’ve got cellos, and the list goes on.
So, maybe you’re expecting a jumbled mess of sounds? A pretentious we-used-more-musical-devices-than-you effort? No no no, not at all. This record is so wholesome and down to earth. All those aforementioned utilities are quietly interspersed throughout the record, adding accent and personality to each song respectively. I want to say jazzy, I want to say bluesy, I want to say so many things, but it’s all of them and more. The breakdowns, bridges, and hooks are unlike any you’ve ever heard, and the mood of the album is in a constant swirl; dark, happy, urgent, whatever it may be. The record begins with “Ephemera,” which is apparently built upon upwards of 75 tracks, and only sports lyrics in the last 25 seconds. That should be a fair warning that this record isn’t your ordinary cup of tea.
It’s implausible to begin to analyze separate tracks, or I’ll end up writing another 6 page review. With little effort I could drum up a paragraph about each of these 13 extravagant pieces of artwork. You’ve got a unique and striking intro song, an emphatic powerhouse of a last track, and a million and one eargasms in between. Lyrical content doesn’t avoid love, but doesn’t linger on it either. “So Excited to Sleep,” describes exactly that.
Listen to this band, and buy this record if you like what you hear. I tend to get swept up when I get a CD in the mail that impresses me, but this is a super solid. With only a handful of listens under my belt I’m already in love with the record and I feel my appreciation growing with each spin of the disc. This Is Me Smiling are wonderful and their future is almost too bright.
