"Angels starting pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a hit-and-run accident early this morning after pitching in Wednesday night's game, according to several Internet news reports."

Just showed up on my ticker on CBS Sportsline. Will update with a better source when available.

This looks to be real and if so, it's terrible.

R.I.P.

Well, whether its 3 or 4 people dead, he's looking at at least 20-40 years in jail...that multiple people died and that he has multiple DUI charges might make him eligible for being charged for numerous counts of 2nd degree murder, and that's peace out to the rest of his life

The only survivor from the Mitsubishi that was involved in the brutal car crash that killed 3 people, including pro baseball player Nick Adenhart, is currently in critical condition at the UC Irvine Medical Center.

We're told Jon Wilhite, a former baseball star at Cal State Fullerton, is moving his legs, but is currently receiving treatment in the medical center's Intensive Care Unit.

TMZ just spoke with the Director of Athletics for Cal. State Fullerton -- where Jon and the driver of the Mitsubishi, Courtney Stewart, went to school -- who just released this statement:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Courtney Stewart and Jon Wilhite. The world of athletics is not equipped for these kinds of tragic events. We understand Jon is conscious and his injuries are not immediately life-threatening"

According to TMZ here (http://www.tmz.com/2009/04/09/adenhart-crash-survivor-moving-legs-conscious/).

the dan patrick show pretty much went silent when this story came in. and they were talking about how surreal it is because you could be watching sportscenter in the morning and see him in the highlights, then 20 seconds later get the update that he's now gone.

shitty situation. sucks for all the families involved.

And the way they started off ESPN was perfect to me, they mentioned that he struggled last year, but finally last night, he had that breakthrough game...and now he's gone...it really helped drive home the impact for me as someone who doesn't follow the Angels or baseball much

It's so fucking terrible how that always the drunk person that kills people NEVER die, they are always perfectly ok from an accident but who they hit results in fatality.

Watching his agent choke up in the press meeting today was hard to watch. Torii Hunter said Nick's dad has been at the stadium in the locker room where his locker is all day. My thoughts go out to his parents and family, his dad must have been so proud last night to watch that and then have to go through this.

The first thing that I thought of was the numerous times I've discussed Adenhart and whether he would transition to the majors like most thought he would because he was pretty bad in triple-a and now I'm looking up his birthday to see that he's exactly 4 months younger than I am. And now gone.

Surreal. And terrifying.

such a shame... for someone with so much talent like him to be taken because of someone elses drunken disregard for anyone else but himself is just not right. they should lock that guy up forever and not give him a second thought. I love this team (the Angels), and I hate that this had to happen to someone on the brink of becoming an All-Star caliber pitcher. RIP

That he's had multiple DUI's before makes him chargeable as someone who "knew the consequences", and that he blew a .24 means there is a bar getting sued for not cutting him off

Regardless, the rest of his life will be behind bars

Wilhite Improving: Former Crab upgraded to 'fair' condition

Neil Tarpey/The Times-Standard
Posted: 05/02/2009 01:24:09 AM PDT

Former Humboldt Crabs catcher Jon Wilhite continues to improve at the University of California, Irvine, Medical Center. The Medical Center's Media Relations Manager, John Murray, confirmed to the Times-Standard on Friday that physicians have upgraded the 24-year-old Wilhite's medical status to “fair.”

Murray confirmed that doctors removed the halo brace that stabilized Wilhite's neck, and that Wilhite is currently undergoing speech and physical therapy.

Wilhite was a passenger in a car that was broadsided by Andrew Thomas Gallo's minivan that ran a red light in Fullerton at 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 9.

According to Larry Altman of the Daily Breeze, Wilhite's injuries included an internal decapitation, a rare separation of the skull from the spinal column, and surgeons operated on April 15 to reattach Wilhite's skull and spinal column.

The other three people -- Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart, 22, Henry Pearson, 25 , and driver Courtney Stewart, 20 -- in the car with Wilhite were killed.

Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas announced that Gallo, 22, is being charged with three counts of murder and other charges, including fleeing the scene of a traffic accident causing death or injury.

Wilhite played collegiate baseball for Cal State Fullerton and was a catcher for the Crabs during the summer of 2004.
