I was never really a fan of their prior material, but I'm really excited to hear this. Also, mad props to Kris for his view of music, wanting to evolve and not just be safe.

Good read, although I don't see them sounding like Sigur Ros at any point in their existence. It reminds me of when Good Charlotte stated their new album was like.....i forget, but something totally off the wall.

I was a big ataris fan, kinda one of those bands I remember just because I listened to it at a fun time in my life. I honestly can't believe thats Kris singing, he sounds so different.
I think it's definately going to push away fans of their previous efforts. But, it really isn't the same band anymore, so one can't expect the same material.
Although I'll miss the old guys, I too am excited for the new album. Liking what I have heard, I hope it doesn't disappoint.

This seems like a whole new project.

The ataris were over after 'so long, astoria'. This should be called Kris Roe and the bastards or something.

I'm looking forward to it.

I really think they are just putting the name 'The Ataris' on this because of a prior fan base. Roe said it himself, they are a different band. Hell, he said he won't even be playing old songs on tour anymore. He should take a big hint from Jonah. When he wanted to do the rock thing, he just called Onelinedrawing a day. Roe should do this. I'm looking forward to the new material, but I think its a cheat to call it The Ataris.

the idea of it all sounds cool, but the clips on their myspace arent too impressive

After seeing Kris and John playing acoustic last night, I think that the new songs aren't going to sound as far fetched as everyone makes it out to be.
I mean sure it's going to be something out of a new vein for the ataris, but it's something that will still be able to be embraced by the fans.
The lyrics on the new songs are some of the best Kris has ever written, and although I previously had mixed emotions on the new stuff, now I am very highly anticipating it.
Check them out if they come by you, and you'll see what i'm saying.

For some reason, reading that news article made me somewhat sad. I don't know what my deal is.

I agree.

I love the ataris.. everything they've done.. and I love this new stuff... but from what he said, the new album sounds like a concept album to me... and is that becoming a trend right now or is it just me? Maybe the bands I listen to are different than bands I've liked before.. anyway. yeah. just a thought.

It really isn't as big an exaggeration as you'd expect. Theres definitely a hint of Sigur Ros in what I've heard. This isn't one of those pop punk "maturation" records, its a whole different sound.

i love the ataris and i think they should change name. not that im not gonna like the new stuff cuz anything Kris puts out is just awesome, but when hearing "ataris" i kinda have this ideal sound in my head that's unique ataris.

but yeah, cant wait for the new stuff. i actually like it. sometimes changes can be good.

could they be doing anymore acoustic shows in Ohio? i'm probably going to end up going to like 4. bowling green, maybe toledo, definitely columbus. i'd go to Athens, but Lucero is playing at the bar i live above that night. how much better could my life be? the Ataris and Lucero in the same day.

also, there's not a whole lot of true substance within So Long, Astoria, so i'm glad Kris let go of the 'we have to at least try to stay the same band' b.s. just do what you want. if it's good, people will listen to it. if it's great, it'll last for a long, long time.

one last thing, how much did it cost to get into the show?

TRUE TIL DEATH.
Jason.

mad props to Kris for making a different kind of music.... HOWEVER, I've been a fan of the Ataris for a long time and my time with them is over, thought the last album was really weak and the new stuff is a new band musically and literally... they should change the name.. well cheers to The Ataris for albums like End is Forever and Blue Skies Broken Hearts and the rest of the stuff before so long astoria... they shoulda called that last album, so long Ataris

i dont think kris roe is showing indiana his love with this small acoustic tour they are doing :(

thats ok, i know he cant control it but it was still sad to see no indianapolis or indiana date on the schedule.

im actually excited for this new album. its exciting to know they are doing new things regardless of the reasoning behind it.

am i the only one actually loving so long astoria? i mean, sure, blue skies and end is forever are my faves, and then i love anywhere but here and so long astoria also. so long astoria was nowhere near pop-punkish anymore but i think the melodies are great and the lyrics are a bit deeper than on the earlier albums

i have been a huge ataris fan for a very long time, ever since Blue Skies was released, and although it is sad to say goodbye to the old ataris that i have always loved, i admit that i have grown out of the music they used to play.. as im sure they have aswell. I don't know why people are bashing the clips they currently have on their myspace, when i heard those clips i was insanely excited for the new album, and aparantly those clips are live off the floor.

Anyways, i'll be patiently waiting for their newest effort and i hope it is everything i know Kris could make it.

kinda nervous for this release, but also very excited because my personal taste in music has also shifted recently from pop-punkish stuff to more indie bands/sounds. I'm definately gonna back kris on this project.

"Which is why fans won't be hearing much old material like "The Boys of Summer" on the Ataris' forthcoming tour" - mtv is retarded. boys of summer should not represent the old ataris sound....pick any other song

ummm on their myspace page it says they're playing munster, IN on Friday (Dec. 2nd). That's the closest they're coming to Chicago and I was bummed because I have a wedding to go to, oh well, I'll catch them full band before the album drops.

p.s. 100 posts!!!

Yeah. It's like a 45 minute drive from me according to mapquest. Dirty whores, I tell you. DEP is also playing. Looks like decisions have to be made. But if they aren't playing old Ataris songs, I don't really want to go.

I am extremely excited about this release. March cannot come soon enough. I'm a fan of So Long, Astoria and this just sounds like it'll blow that album away. Seven band members, including a cellist and a keyboardist, yes...this is an almost certified eargasm waiting to happen.

They are wonderful.. but this new album is no way going to reflect the ataris we know and love. Don't get me wrong I am looking forward to this album.. but I am not thinking of it as an ataris album. But yes ataris are awesome.

Did anyone else notice this whole bit:

"The LP revolves around a dark story inspired by a recurring dream Roe has had since childhood. "At the start of it, it's the end of everything, the end of the world," he said. "The sun turns black, and I'm in this little church in this small town, and then I wake up. There've been different variations of it throughout my life. But the album has religious and spiritual undertones and addresses issues like hope, loss, questioning life, how we're so afraid of dying."

That sounds remarkably similar to Pete Wentz's basis for Clandestine Industries and "The Boy With the Thorn in his Side". Not, you know, throwing any accusations around. I love the Ataris (especially "Anywhere But Here"). Just an interesting aside.

im really excited for the new stuff as well.. the only thing im bummed about is i wonder how much of the old ataris we'll ever get to hear live again. i o u one galaxy is my ultimate favorite song ever. i might be a little bummed if i never hear that live again...

i agree. i think kris had a good idea when they decided to cover that song but i think the second it got out he kicked himself for it...everything is always referred back to that song and its nothing that should ever represent the ataris new, old, past, present or future...

ummm on their myspace page it says they're playing munster, IN on Friday (Dec. 2nd). That's the closest they're coming to Chicago and I was bummed because I have a wedding to go to, oh well, I'll catch them full band before the album drops.

yea i saw that too...but only after i made the comment on here...but at the same time its still too far for me to get to although its super tempting. it just too far and too short of notice
