View Full Version : Most Epic Album (in your opinion)
Inspired by discussion in the Sonic Youth thread. What is the album that you would consider the most epic album you've ever heard? This doesn't mean favorite album, although a lot of peoples' responses will be their favorite album (I would think). For example, your favorite album may be an album by an artist like Owen, whereas Owen's music is not epic per se, but you love it for other reasons. But hey, if you think it is the most epic album you've heard, by all means, post it as your choice.
I would try and describe the word epic but I can't really put it into words. Dictionary.com describes it as; Surpassing the usual or ordinary, particularly in scope or size, heroic and impressive in quality.
Please try to keep your pick personal to yourself, otherwise this thread won't be very interesting. Don't just say something like Sgt Pepper just because it was such a groundbreaking album. Pick it if you think it is the most epic album you've heard. If you think Vheissu is epic, pick Vheissu.
My pick - Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation.

Good thread idea. I think some concept albums are epic just because of the size, story, and scope. I'll throw out some in a bit

Ex Models - Chrome Panthers
this album continually blows my mind
its so simple but so innovative
their older albums were really crazy off time dance music and Chrome Panthers is so different in the best way
i cant describe how i feel about this album intelligently

Thrice- Vheissu. One reason it is epic is because of the scope of the lyrics. They are unbelievable and I still find different meanings. another reason is the way it flows together even between the heavier songs and the softer ones. and the climaxes of each song just blow me away every time 4 years later. The ending of Earth Will Shake, Hold Fast hope, Stand and Feel Your Worth, For Miles, Like Moths to Flame, and Red Sky are nothing short of beautiful, chilling, and of course EPIC

There's nothing about Vheissu that's epic, other than being epicly overhyped.
I guess Mr. Bungles S/T is also epic in the sense that it has amazing songs, has great a beginning and ending. Seriously, the end of Dead Goon just warms the soul and makes you think 'What an amazing album'. Maybe not epic, but it feels like closing a hardcover book while sitting in a red armrest chair in front of a fireplace when Dead Goon ends. Really feels like something is going on.

Not to try to out-obscure everyone, but Ornette Coleman's The Shape of Jazz To Come and John Cage's Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano. Both of those albums blew my sixteen year old mind right the fuck up. I felt like I could see the course of events in music history from then until now.
In terms of music more this half of the century, I gotta go with Ágætis Byrjun (yes I learned the keystrokes for making those fancy Icelandic letters, deal with it). I came face to face with god the first time I heard that album.

Representing Canada in Boys Night Out-Trainwreck for one of the most epic albums of all time. The Residents - Commercial Album
Forty 1 minute songs
When you listen to the album from start to finish it becomes almost unbearably creepy and gives you the worst feeling in your stomach, despite none of the songs being particularly creepy (or "dark" really) on their own.

Everything screams "Epic" at me on there. So much atmosphere behind it!
all the over dubbing in it is so great
i didnt enjoy their tour supporting it though, which bummed me out

its really interesting to see what people are saying.
its kind of a "learning experience," if you will, because i've only just begun to get into anything that could be considered "music" (in my opinion anyway) in the past... eh... three years? maybe? so i'm sitting here thinking about my most epic albums... and it's nothing like this. but then again, i'm a fifteen-year-old girl who is just trying to be taken seriously! :) haha
that was semi-sarcastic...
Edit: hmmm... reading that a second time makes me sound a little... well... hahaha

The Depreciation Guild - In Her Gentle Jaws
TMV - Deloused & Frances
Amusement Parks On Fire - Self Titled(how the first 5 tracks is like one long song..epic)
Faunts - High Expectations/Low Results
Explosions In The Sky - everything theyve made(besides the friday night lights)
I have more..just drawing a blank right now. I saw this beginning of thread in the SY forum, and was totally gonna make this exact one, but i got beat to it. lol I also hear that And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead has an epic cd. Im gonna check into that..

Neither are obscure, so no worries. I agree with the Coleman definitely. I'd put Bitches Brew and Giant Steps up there as well for jazz.
In terms of indie, as I said in the Sonic Youth thread, I'd go with Spiderland because of how it manages to make the epic feel so intimate. I'm inclined to note Idaho's Three Sheets to the Wind for the same reason.

For electronic-ish stuff, it doesn't get any more epic than Manuel Gottschings album-length track E2-E4. To be able to sit down one night, alone in a room aside from a guitar and some effects, and effectively create the trance genre, is mind-boggling.

I would have to disagree that TDAG is "epic" It is one of my favorite cd's ever, and BN is my #1 favorite band, but epic? no. It has some epic songs, but the cd as a whole isnt epic to me. Some songs like "untitled" and "handcuffs" really bring the cd down. I would even say that Deja flows together better then TDAG. Even though TDAG had better songs on it, the cd isnt epic. But to each their own.

I would hay to say Coheed and Cambria's In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3 is the closest album that I can describe as "epic".

Representing Canada in Boys Night Out-Trainwreck for one of the most epic albums of all time. When you put on the first song you have to listen to the whole thing because the story is just unbelievable. I mean the guy kills his wife in his sleep and then gets put into a mental institution. Sick storyline and the guitar work is very unique.... basically if you haven't heard it go listen for yourself and you will agree

That's not what happened at all.
Their previous singer, Spencer, didn't work out, so they auditioned and found then-17-year-old Sierra. Since then they've released two incredibly solid EPs, and they're one of the most promising newer bands out there. They're not Paramore, they're VersaEmerge.

Yeah, all of those bands are making their case.
And I feel like getting a female vocalist could be smart as of now. Like, yeah its off to kind of a slow start in mass popularity, but I think just like hardcore music is gaining popularity, female based groups will see their limelight, its just a matter of time, hell Hey Monday is seeing it now, and being on the real world doesn't hurt their case either.

Well yeah there's no question that I agree. But even with that said, it still carries that they could have been overall unimpressed with the band if they'd only heard those two records, since in Radiohead's terms they're the most straight-ahead rock--not the more experimental brilliance showed on OK Computer and Kid A.
Music can be epic, people who don't think so need to pick up their dictionaries and start reading. That said, almost nothing listed here should be considered epic.

Ehem, have you even listen to any of these?
Neither are obscure, so no worries. I agree with the Coleman definitely. I'd put Bitches Brew and Giant Steps up there as well for jazz.
In terms of indie, as I said in the Sonic Youth thread, I'd go with Spiderland because of how it manages to make the epic feel so intimate. I'm inclined to note Idaho's Three Sheets to the Wind for the same reason.
For post-rockish stuff, definitely Tarentel's From Bone to Satellite. The name's reference to 2001: A Space Odyssey gives you an idea of what kind of sonic expanses will be traveled. "Steede Bonnet" and "For Carl Sagan" are jaw-dropping.
In the noise genre, look no further than Boredoms. Permeated with explosions of the tribal and primal, their LPs Vision Creation Newsun and Super Ae epitomize epic.
For electronic-ish stuff, it doesn't get any more epic than Manuel Gottschings album-length track E2-E4. To be able to sit down one night, alone in a room aside from a guitar and some effects, and effectively create the trance genre, is mind-boggling.
