Adding some twinkly pretentious strings and whatnot in the background to some generic pop/rock tune is not "original and creative," it's just stupid and boring. NFG has survived the test of time, whereas FD has put out one of the most forgettable "musical" albums in history.

its all good 03
04/12/09, 09:45 PM
if this were a contest of albums, i would take either of forgive durden's cds over everything from nfg but the self-titled. but releasing badass cds from 1997 to now definitely outweighs forgive durden's two cds, as amazing as they are.

im glad to see at least some votes for FD tho

alright, that's respectable :)

I love Thomas but all of you saying that they are more creative needs to check things out. Wonderland was basically a FD Gatsby's album and Razia's Shadow was a The Dear Hunter album. Sure both albums are great but there isn't a lot of originality going on.

NFG is decent but I really think NWAF is a complete step back for them. It's basically an album they've already made 3 times before compared to the steps forward they made with Coming Home. Plus, I can never get over how terrible their lyrics are

Forgive Durden are far more original and creative. Both albums they've put out have been better than NFG's best by a landslide for me. They won't win, which is fine because I still really respect and moderately enjoy NFG

RonStoppable
04/13/09, 08:03 AM
Pretty sure NFG will win handily here, though I've heard Forgive Durden are sick. And if that's a Fight Club nod in their name, I dig it. Though Sticks & Stones, Self-Titled, Nothing Gold Can Stay, Coming Home (Underrated IMO) and Not Without a Fight win.

This.

I don't get the hype surrounded by NFG here. Especially about the new album. I listened to it when it was available to stream, it felt generic and the chug - FYS/ADTR esque parts forced coming from NFG.

Steve is NOT a terrible lyricist at all. He's just not grown all that much from when he first started writing. I swear some of the lines from NGCS are better than NWAF but maybe it's because of how young he was when he wrote it. There are far worse lyricists out than than Steve. But I do agree with their lyrics not improving much over the last few records.

Damn, this one is tough. I love everything NFG, and am going to see them at the end of the month. But Forgive Durden is probably one of the most creative artists in the scene today, and just for the masterpiece that was Razia's Shadow, FD gets my vote.

Totally disagree. Have you heard both of FD's albums in their entirety? Wonderland in particular is much more than generic pop/rock. I would say NFG is much more generic than them (not saying I dont love them, though!). There are only a few bands that sound similar to FD, but hundreds that sound very similar to NFG.

I'd hardly consider any of Forgive Durden's stuff, generic, especially nothing from Razia's Shadow. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy me some NFG, but just about any honest person can name 5-10 bands that sound like New Found Glory without blinking. They haven't really evolved or changed a whole lot throughout their career, whereas Thomas Dutton is trying new things.

edit: I wish I had read that post above me before posting essentially the same exact thing myself. Right on, Bruised26. Fight the good fight. That being said, everyone knew NFG was going to trump Forgive Durden. Nice to see all the love in this thread though.

Forgive Durden only SOUNDS like it's original. It's really the same pop/rock formula with some fake "epic" instruments in the back.

Well, my opinion is that your opinion sucks, and is wrong. Plus, I get the feeling you're a major douche from just this post alone. But, that being said, NFG running away with this one is not only fair, its expected. NFG has just done more for the scene and really brought originality to an unoriginal sound. I guess I'd be more sympathetic to your asshole view if I didn't think Forgive Durden had some good music, but that's just bullshit. So put the clown suit back in the closet buddy. We all love NFG, no sense in starting a crusade over it.

whats the pop rock formula?
its alot more original than the typical pop punk formula. and dont get me wrong i LOVE pop punk. but im sick to death of a hearing lines like dressed to kill in every second song.
and it isnt just the strings... he creates some amazing melodies which i consider very orignal in both albums. annd the concept of a musical was great. very difficult to pull of.

This'll be a blow-out for the AP darlings, but Wonderland is more interesting than anything NFG have ever written. Ever.
Unquestionably. Album will never get old for me.

Forgive Durden only SOUNDS like it's original. It's really the same pop/rock formula with some fake "epic" instruments in the back.

When I think if pop punk and NFG, I think people lump some bands like this in the "generic" category... But back then there weren't TONS of bands that sounded like them. Now look at most pop punk bands. NFG is going to be HIGH on their list of inspirations... If you're just a generic crappy band that sounds like everyone else how can you inspire so many other bands?

People followed them, they didn't follow so much... In my opinion.

whats the pop rock formula?
its alot more original than the typical pop punk formula. and dont get me wrong i LOVE pop punk. but im sick to death of a hearing lines like dressed to kill in every second song.
and it isnt just the strings... he creates some amazing melodies which i consider very orignal in both albums. annd the concept of a musical was great. very difficult to pull of.

It's not pop-punk, it's pop/rock. Refer to several posts above this one where the guys says they sound like Dear Hunter. And they do, so much so that it's boring. The Dear Hunter isn't even good. He doesn't pull off any new melodies, if you listen around even within the "scene", you can tell the melodies are pitifully recycled. The record sounded like it took no effort at all to write. It's easy to slap some generic Dear Hunter melody on a CD and decorate it with some pretentious background instruments that add nothing to the album whatsoever and call it a "musical." The storyline was also shamefully pretentious. Razia's Shadow was one of the worst albums of 2008 - FD please stick to Wonderland stuff.

Shhhh, there there. No need to get angry about FD hopelessly sucking.

I don't like NFG that much, but FD deserves next to 0 praise.

I know a couple people have already pointed this out, but you all need to understand that NFG released their first album in 1999 (was there one before that???) BEFORE the 5-10 bands that could be named. And if you want to challenge that, then I would like you to name the 5-10 bands in this thread so I can give your argument a fair chance. Otherwise, use a little historical perspective. NFG shouldn't take the slack for other bands mirroring their sound.

as for the evolving argument, I disagree. I can understand ppl saying that the first 3 albums sound "unevolved" but catalyst definately takes a step out of the ordinary NFG imo, and Coming home is totally different, much softer in lyrics and music. Coming Home side by side to self-titled shows clear evolution and change. Then they put out a hardcore album (although I know it's not truly 'NFG') and now NWAF. TEN awesome years of NFG.

NFG fans can see the changes from album to album. it's great that you're showing love for the underdog, but there's no reason to humble NFG's career.

I'll tell you what, it's really killing me how small of an effort it takes to impress the little scenesters in here. Razia's Shadow is a complete joke, but it has kids convinced that Forgive Durden are branching out into some epic musical territory. It's simply the same garbage, and I can't help but laugh at all those 'strings' that have replaced the guitars. I'm sure classical violinists are rolling over in their graves. What a pretentious sack of crap. Even though their first record was a Gatsby's ripoff, it is far less obnoxious.

New Found Glory should be getting a much higher percentage on this one. It's cute that people who listen to Forgive Durden are complaining about a lack of orginality, but let's look at the facts here. New Found Glory has been around for 10+ years in a genre that almost always is stale by a band's second album. They have toured relentlessly and built a solid reputation among their fans. They are still true to what they were when they first started out. Their hooks are endearing and their melodies are infectious. They have had a few missteps along the way, but come on, they are icons around here.

It just seems that the people slamming on the Forgive Durden fans are citing time as a factor, and they're usually older than than the FD fans.

Time should be a factor in having a favorite band. A band needs to stand the test of time. I used to LOVE TAI during Almost Here but Fast Times sucked so they aren't a favorite anymore.

Time SHOULD be a factor, but it's not always. Yes, New Found Glory have longevity. Hell, I VOTED for New Found Glory. They've been a favorite for a while. But to completely wail on other and/or younger members because they like Forgive Durden more, and saying that NFG being around longer is part of the justification, just doesn't make sense, at least not to me.

well... fine...

I wasn't "wailing" on younger members for choosing FD, I was arguing the point made by the younger members that NFG isn't original or maturing. Besides, us old folks can use the same argument towards them-- longevity shouldn't be a factor with talent, but it's definately a factor with originality.

respect your elders. ha.

True. I guess it just seemed unfair that some older members were going off about how they're idiots for thinking Razia's Shadow was in any way original and that Forgive Durden was awful, etc. My comment wasn't directed at you.

I understood your argument, it's ridiculous to say that New Found Glory have sounded exactly the same for 10 years. But I think it's also ridiculous to say that Razia's Shadow is completely unoriginal and sounds like everything else out there and that they can't understand that because they're not old enough to have been listening to pop punk music for as long as someone else.

Beeteedubs, I voted New Found Glory, haha.
