Surgeons in France, successfully completed the world’s first face transplant (http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&q=face+transplant) operation this weekend. The patient, a woman who was mauled by a dog, had her face reconstructed using a nose, chin and skin taken from a donor cadaver.

That's really weird. But it's cool that science can allow people to do such things.

this is a good thing
btw for those of you dumb enough to think shes gonna look anything like the dead person you are retarded because if you know anything about that sorta thing you know that your face looks the way it does because the bone structure not the face itself heh

Nip/Tuck already did this like 3 weeks ago.
The theoretical ability to peform this procedure was actually published in the NEJM several years ago. Independent groups in the US and Europe had teams research the mechanics behind it. But it became an ethics question that most hospitals and universities did not want to touch. Psychological impact is also apparently a concern, per BBC article.
However, with any major transplant, the lifetime dependence on immunosuppressive therapy definitely makes this something that won't become a Hollywood fad.
Still really interesting though...

Nip/Tuck gets their ideas from real cases.
And if you'll remember, the transplant didn't take, so...necrotic tissue here we come.

its great and all that this woman can finally move on with her life, but you have to just draw the line somewhere. i was reading this article in usa today and this is honestly one of the only things that has really just creeped me out. they had pictures of this on usatoday.com and they had a picture of the cooler where they transported the transplant face and just gave me a really uneasy feeling.

i'm just surprised no one's made a "your face!" joke yet.
I'm a fan of old fashioned surgery.
