I am a pretty big Dane Cook fan, but I completely agree with whomever said he is guilty of sometimes trying too hard... one listen to Retaliation and that is painfully obvious. A couple skits on there are absolutely gold, but as a whole I think it gets bogged down not only by some of the routines, but his constant hamming it up to the crowd, which is just distracting.

Harmful If Swallowed is just solid track-for-track, though.

worst episode of the year so far...ive been an SNL fan for too long, and compare shows to when it was actually very funny

i dont mind the new cast, i really think there is some potential, and i do like SOME of Dane Cook's comedy, but I agree, that sometimes he tries too hard, and forces his jokes (especially when he over-annouciates words). but seeing him live, is worth the bucks.

im stoked for Alec Baldwin next week....he is ALWAYS funny on SNL (he and John Goodman).

Yea, James Blunt is really good. His album as a whole is pretty good. He was a soldier in the British Army or something then made an album, something like that. I really cant rmember that well since I read it a month ago.

I was let down by the skits. The Jay Feely skit and the Mike Irvin were the only highlights of the show for me. Dane Cook made it bearable but they could've used him better, imo.

SNL is a trainwreck now. Dane Cook wasn't very funny at all, which disappointed me, but didn't shock me as he's a comedian, not an actor. The Target skit made me want to shoot myself.

SwedishHeat

The thing I don't get is, lots of people talk about how Tina Fey is a great writer, and that shows, because Weekend Update is the only consistently (moderately) funny part of the show. So, why can't they get her to write the whole show?? Or why doesn't she tell the other people, "No, that's not funny".

Yeah, when I read that David Cross letter, it started to open my eyes about Dane's shortcomings. He's funny, but I'm starting to be on Dane Cook overload right now.

If you haven't noticed, SNL has really been going downhill. The past year of episodes has really SUCKED TERRIBLY. MUCH worse than this saturday. The John Heder episode was probably the worst out there. Dane basically made the episode what it was, and it is probably going to the best of 2005

I like how the only part that most people liked was the taco sketch...but that was a repeat of the exact same sketch from the first episode of the season! It wasn't even a different version in a series of taco commercials, it was the exact same one! That pissed me off...they didn't have enough material so they literally repeated one of the only good gags of the season and gave Dane a longer monologue. As for the rest of the show, it was like one long punch in the shoulder...Dane tried to make the most of his material but in overacting it he just came off as trying too hard...love the guy to death, but when you have crappy material it's hard to do anything with it. Oh well, so long SNL, bring on the mad tv!

first off, mad tv is just as much of a wash as snl. and by the way, snl reruns commercials skits (the taco sketch) all the time. it's nothing new, so don't think snl was trying to pull anything over your eyes with that one. the show is on the decline, no doubt and dane wasnt as horrible on the show as everyone is making him out to be, you all will probably still quote shit from the show and not even notice. The point is, way back when, when jim carey hosted everyone said it was horrible just like this because everyone hated the cast, it was like will ferrels first season on the show and they had a lot of people that were nobody's, nearly 10 years later, that cast and that episode in particular have been regaurded as some of the best stuff snl ever had. if you don't watch snl other than maybe 2 or 3 times a year don't expect to turn it on when your favorite overplayed comedian is on and expect it to be funny. if you watch the show more regularly and have a feel for cast members you have a new respect for the skits.

he is an actor, he's been in several films.

I should have said "good actor." I know he's been in several films, but that doesn't necessarily make you a good actor. He's decent, but he overacts a lot, or at least he did on SNL (not saying much, as most of the SNL cast overacts).

I did not enjoy the musical guest at all. He bored me to death and the way he sings was kind of annoying to me.

first off, mad tv is just as much of a wash as snl. and by the way, snl reruns commercials skits (the taco sketch) all the time. it's nothing new, so don't think snl was trying to pull anything over your eyes with that one. the show is on the decline, no doubt and dane wasnt as horrible on the show as everyone is making him out to be, you all will probably still quote shit from the show and not even notice. The point is, way back when, when jim carey hosted everyone said it was horrible just like this because everyone hated the cast, it was like will ferrels first season on the show and they had a lot of people that were nobody's, nearly 10 years later, that cast and that episode in particular have been regaurded as some of the best stuff snl ever had. if you don't watch snl other than maybe 2 or 3 times a year don't expect to turn it on when your favorite overplayed comedian is on and expect it to be funny. if you watch the show more regularly and have a feel for cast members you have a new respect for the skits.
i thought the jim carey episode was hilarious when i first saw it. the lifeguard of the hot tub was one of the better skits of that era.

holy all caps censor. settle down. he was hilarious before, he's hilarious now, just because thousands of others think so now as well doesn't mean he's not funny. that being said, i know where you're coming from. i've been a huge dane fan for a solid YEAR before his first CD even came out...

im stoked for Alec Baldwin next week....he is ALWAYS funny on SNL (he and John Goodman).

Wow. Neither are funny at all. The 10 or so episodes with Goodman have been the worst ever.

actually, no. i would argue that your statement is a complete fallacy. fred armisen, will forte, amy poehler, tina fey, and jason sudeikis are some of the most talented writers/performers in the scene today. either you know nothing about sketch comedy, or you just have a deep affection for the easy to digest, slapstick humor of chris farley and adam sandler. either way, i think today's cast is the most talented in years.

you're alone, then. the writing isn't great, and the cast just isn't funny. I don't find Will Forte or Fred Armisen to be funny in the least. I have always enjoyed Tina Fey's writing, and the addition of the guys from The Lonely Town (Jorma and Akiva) have been great too...but I am a big SNL fan, I've watched it through the seasons, and the writing just lacks, period. Plus, the cast as a whole isn't very good. There's a few stars (Hammond, Sanz) but they never get to go off like they used to. I don't think I only appreciate slapstick humor, that's a broad generalization for somebody you know nothing about, I thought Tim Meadows was the ultimate role player on SNL who added so much to the show, Will Ferrell of course was brilliant, and of course my all time favorite, and most underrated SNL cast member, Kevin Nealon.

Check the ratings. SNL is hurting right now, and it's the nationwide consensus. I'm glad you like it right now, but it doesn't come anywhere close to where it's been in years past. It sure seems like the writing, but the fact remains that the skits are poorly executed and are straight up not funny half the time. The fake commercials however, are awesome. (The taco tote bag is fucking hilarious.)

well this argument will never really go anywhere. i think the most recent cast has the smartest humor of all the casts, complete with the smartest writing and execution, i think they are a few years ahead of their time though, so most of the truly intelligent humor gets lost on most people that watch it (thus less and less people watch it--> low ratings) and this has been the case with most SNL casts. i have my opinions though, and you have yours. guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
