View Full Version : "Emo" Bands

My friend and I got into this discussion as to what bands could be considered "emo." I feel like people sometimes lump a bunch of bands that aren't really emo into the genre just because they don't know what a true emo band is, and I think it is giving a bad connotation.
So what bands do you listen to/ would consider to make emo music?

Anyone who sees what I listen to, they automatically put it down as emo. Their conception of emo is Fall Out Boy, Takign Back Sunday, and My Chemical Romance, and when they hear of a band that has haircuts that swoosh to the side or wear tight jeans, they just classify it as emo. I dont mind, I mean its a completely wrong label but I dont care what people label the music as long as I like it
These bands are the definition of emo
I Set My Friends On Fire
Escape the Fate
Dot Dot Curve
William Control
Second Serenade
I remember when MCR, TBS and The Used were the definition"of emo. Now I dunno whats what in the scene anymore. It's passing me bye.

You are getting trolled to shit right now. There used to be a very informative post on Emo around here somewhere. I believe it was a sticky. But brand new are no where emo. Neither is The Used, MCR, or probably any other band you listen to. It's not your fault you're just uneducated in the genre and it's used so loosely it's hard telling. I'm not saying I know anything about emo, I just know the basics from lurking these forums. lol

Well, Rolling Stone says that Fall Out Boy are the leaders of the "emo" movement. The Academy Is... had the best emo album last year. Angels & Airwaves is emo-rock. Thursday is emo-hardcore. A Day to Remember are emo metal. They started off their Jimmy Eat World Futures review with "Jim Adkins has gone on record to say that his band is not emo and that the term is abused daily. Sorry Jimmy! Still emo!".
Considering this is the best music publication in the business, they can't be wrong! I hope that cleared up the term for you today!

You're an idiot if you think the current incarnation of emo is better than the Gregorian monk version. Today's emo bands just get famous because of their clothes of their hair. At least the monks were all bald and dressed the same so you know their music was from the heart! Get the fuck out and learn to love real music!

"these days" its a culture. the phrase "emo" no longer means what it originally meant. obviously. now you're considered emo if you have swooshed black hair, X's on your hands, eye liner, and if your music talks about death.

Holy crap 3/4 of the people in this thread are complete retards. Whoever thinks Brand New is emo obviously has something wrong with their mind, and should never ever ever listen to emo music ever.
and to answer your question......
Rites Of Spring
Mineral
Sunny Day Real Estate
Texas Is The Reason
The Gloria Record
The Get Up Kids (sort of....not really though)
The Promise Ring
Braid
and i could go on and on but the biggest emo pioneers were definitely blink-182

Well the absolute pinnacle of noise rock for me is the Japanese band Boredoms--mainly because their take on it is much more experimental than others. Primal and tribal, the albums Super Ae and especially Vision Creation Newsun will make you explode. Listen here: http://www.last.fm/music/Boredoms. Shellac is definitely a must, although it's much more minimalist and driven by sardonic lyrics. McLusky is another great band, although they're definitely on the accessible side of the genre, whereas something like Lightning Bolt would be more intense. Wonderful Rainbow is considered by many to be their best. Once you listen to it you'll see how removed it is from TDaG. You mentioned SY--well aside from their side projects and experimental excursions, the noise rock tag for them hasn't been applicable for some time. They're much tamer and more indie these days. Also recently you have the bands centered around the LA venue the Smell. HEALTH would be the most noise rock of them. And then you have the genre just known as noise, pretty much epitomized by Japan's Merzbow. You can't go wrong with anything I mentioned, though, and obviously there's a ton more to the style. It's actually one of the genres I know the least about, although I hope to learn more. But yeah, just listen and explore.

I always considered a band emo kinda by the way the lead singer pronounces their words. Emo bands have this certain...accent that they use when they sing. Fall Out Boy..Paramore, TBS, FFTL. They have that emo tone, instead of saying "My" it sounds like "muuahy" lol..something like that.

I'm actually not a child, but a 47 year old pedophile that preys on young scene girls through AP.net.
It was clearly a joke, and when I check my "who quoted me" section, I click the link then respond to the post so I didn't see anything posted after that. A blind person most likely can't type and use a computer, its impossible to be an actual douche, I'm obviously not "poor at sarcasm," you are just trying to hide the fact that you can't pick up on sarcasm that is right in front of you and could in no way be more obvious, even over the internet, and no, I'm not a child, I'm a teenager whom is only 4 years younger than you.

hey, thats just the way I see it. When I hear a band with a lead singer sing like that, I discard them as typical pop-punk emo that has been played out for the past 7 years. Does anyone else here know what i mean by the emo accent?? pronouncing "my" like "muawy" or, "you" is like.."yaaaou" "I" is like "oiy" im sure they arent ALL like that, but alot of what ive heard is.
