View Full Version : Writing stuff...
With writing songs and stuff, i find it easier to do alone. I tried to write some stuff with a friend recently, but it didn't seem to work. Things i came up with sort of... were warped by another person's creative input. He didn't really get what i came up with when i was trying to describe it to him, which frustrated me. Really, i'd feel more comfortable doing things my own way, Bryce Avary style. I'd rather being in a band though.
Is this me being naturally independant musically, or is it just me not being used to writing with others?

sometimes you have to play with each other for awhile before things start to click and you figure out how to work together... give it some time and i'd expect things to get better.

There's nothing wrong with only one person in the band doing the majority of the songwriting.
Thanks guys. I'll see how it goes. I'll write stuff myself so my personal ability gets better, but keep trying with him.

in every band I was in before this one, I wrote all the music/drums/lyrics/vocals. It was weird to share the duties at first, but if you are working with really talented people who know how to express a feeling into music; then the results will be very unique.

I've done it both ways. I write on my own, and then I also write with my band. I find each method to be rewarding, just in different ways. There's a magic to writing in a group, where everyone brings something unique and distinctly their own to the group. There's also a magic to seeing a group of people play something you wrote, and having it translated as you conceptualized. In that setting, you just have to write all the parts so there's nothing lost in translation.

You sound a lot like me. I recently joined a band and their style of writing was somewhat different to my style of writing, so there was a lot of complications. I discovered I am better to write a full song, play it to them at practice, then we all play it. So I would recommend writing by yourself. But keep in mind, if the direction you want the band to go in is different than the direction they want the band to go in, it may not be the best musical environment for you.

In my band, we all kinda just go back and forth when it comes to song writing, but lyrics are usually between the two vocalists, i dont even really have a say in the few vocal parts i do.

I just quit my band for this very reason. We tried writing with 6 people together. Things just didn't click, and I have a GIGANTIC amount of stuff I've already finished on my own. Really though, I prefer it that way. It's just a matter of finding people who are fine with one person being the main songwriter, or rather, everyone writes songs on their own and brings them in for the band to play, Pearl Jam-stylie.

That's the way my band works. It's basically one main songwriter, but I contribute maybe one song for every three of his, and now even some of the other guys are starting to work on writing.
It works well - people just need to not have an ego, and be open to ideas.
