| www.absolutepunk.net/cuteiswhatweaimfor/ | Information | The Billboard Life is short and the last thing we want to do is waste your time. By now, you already know the myriad feats Cute Is What We Aim For have accomplished since forming in 2005. The band’s 2006 debut The Same Old Blood Rush With A New Touch spent countless months on the Billboard Top 200 Charts; the group successfully headlined Alternative Press’ Bands You Need To Know tour (and graced the cover of the magazine) and Cute Is What We Aim For were named one of Rolling Stones’ 10 Artists To Watch—all while the group were still teenagers living in the dreary blue-collar town of Buffalo, New York.
While the band managed to exceed even their own expectations with their debut, being thrown into this type of whirlwind success forced the group to grow up quickly—and this marked maturity is evident with every note of the band’s follow-up, Rotation. “We’re not seventeen anymore; there’s so much to be said about these past few years of being in a pressure cooker and learning what the real world is like,” explains vocalist Shaant Hacikyan, stating that this time around the band decided to make a record for themselves without taking any scene politics or trends into consideration. “I think this record is going to do such incredible things and launch us to another level.”
In order to fully realize their vision, the band—which also includes guitarist Jeff Czum, drummer Tom Falcone and new bassist Dave Melillo—holed up in Los Angeles with Goldfinger’s John Feldmann armed with only a blurry sketch of what the songs that would eventually make up Rotation. “We only had one full song written going into the studio and I thought we were going to get kicked out,” Czum explains with a laugh, adding that he felt some extra pressure considering the fact that Goldfinger is one of Czum’s favorite bands. “Thankfully, we work best under pressure and I really think that added stress helped shape these songs.”
“A lot of the bands I’ve worked with don’t want to experiment too much, but these guys were really open-minded and I think that’s why this record turned out so good,” explains Feldmann, who has previously produced and discovered artists like the Used and Story Of The Year. “I just tried to push them by putting a piano in front of them instead of a guitar and making them write on that instrument or by putting them in different physical environments,” he adds. “I always like to try and push artists, I felt like these guys allowed me to push them as far as I could. [Making this record] was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in the studio.”
Listening to Rotation, this urgency is almost palpable and Feldmann—whose production techniques ranged from making Melillo throw punches at Hacikyan during tracking to literally tracking songs on the beach near Monterey—pulled something special out of the group by getting them outside of their comfort zone. This is immediately evident with the first single “Doctor,” which features singing synths and a new-wave sensibility while still retaining Cute Is What We Aim For’s caustic lyrical wit and penchant for soaring choruses. Alternately, “Loser” evokes classic material by pop-punk royalty like Green Day, while the electronic flourishes on “Navigate” show the band stretching out and exploring alternate forms of arrangement, instrumentation and, maybe most importantly, collaboration.
Hacikyan explains that this time around he was more influenced by classic songwriters like Tom Petty and John Lennon instead of anyone in the current music scene—and that’s obvious while listening to the lyrical progression on Rotation. “We realized ‘How are we going to make a statement if we’re trying to just go along with everyone else?’” Hacikyan explains, adding that the lyrics for Rotation were improvised in the vocal booth to keep them from sounding too calculated. “I think we just realized that if anyone is going to take us seriously, let’s take the classics. Why not be influenced by the masters instead of individuals with the same influences as me?” He also adds that the band’s newest member Melillo was instrumental in the writing process and, maybe, more importantly made the band feel like a cohesive unit for the first time ever.
If the band had to name one lyrical theme on Rotation, it would be “change,” which makes perfect sense when you consider the plateaus and pitfalls the band has endured over the past few years. “This one had such a cohesive message of change: external change, internal change, global change, political change, social change—everything on this record has a message,” Hacikyan elaborates. “The last time we made a record it was all me and the other guys wouldn’t do anything because it was an unhappy environment,” he adds. “We didn’t know any better [then], but this time we had a vision we could follow artistically.
“Making this album was such a learning process and I want to stress not just musically but from a life perspective I think we’ve developed so much,” Hacikyan summarizes. “We realized this is a career and we have to go for it; we can’t just be kids and take it for granted. At times, I didn’t appreciate our situation because it happened so quickly,” he adds, reflecting on the band’s tumultuous few years of inner-band struggles and member changes. “Now there’s so much satisfaction in understanding life isn’t about the destination, it’s in the journey.”

I'm not here to support the guy, and act all "omigodhesmyherohessoamazing" because I know celebrities in bands are portrayed as heros, or, the alternative, assholes - there doesn't seem to be an .. inbetween, regular guy.
BUT, you don't know him, so, don't judge him on whatever 'personal battles' he has or has not fought.

Offline | Ian Curtis???!!!
Ian Curtis was a strong, poetic, and slightly disturbed genius who had a family at 19, and worked hard for a living to support them in the mean time. He and Joy Division transformed the city of Manchester into a musical mecca. Ian fought hard battles in his life and his lyrics reflect that. The only hard battles Shaant has fought include getting wedgies and deciding which flat brimmed fitted hat makes him look more "sensitive". Just saying. |

i agree with alice(ruthless). CiWWAF's lyrics are just as witty (NOT SHITTY) as Blood Rush's .
sure, theres some saxophone in hollywood and a bit of bird chirping and creek bubbling in time, but even though those aren't that great of concepts to begin with, CIWWAF MAKES THEM SOUND SO DAMN GOOD !!
its like yellowcard. they can rock a fiddle, ciwwaf can rock... a sax? they sure can.
your next challenge? SPOOOOOOONS.
keep rockin the scene you rock in, guys :)
we appriciate your music. |

Offline | I have been reading the seemingly never-ending criticisms on websites such as Absolute Punk, on new CiWWAF album Rotation, Shaant Hacikyan himself and the new 'shitty lyrics' with interest and disgust.
Okay, okay so I am an avid CiWWAF fan but I am not writing this 'rant' because of that. I am writing this because I think some of the things that are said about the band are just cruel.
For starters, although I have not had the honour of meeting such an influential guy, from what I have seen and heard (with my own eyes & ears), he seems geniunely interested in what the fans had to say. At the CiWWAf gig I attended in June this year, Shaant took the time to meet every (available) fan after the gig ended, and said he was 'so sorry' not to have been in the UK for such a long time. Cocky, arrogant? I think not.
Secondly, although I prefer The Same Old Blood Rush to new album Rotation, it appears that the band have put equal amounts of effort into both. They seem proud of what they have done and they should be, the album's are, without doubt, very good.
- THE LYRICS ARE NOT SHITTY.
Y'know, I haven't looked up what each song means, but they don't, from what I've heard and assumed, all seem to be about 'Making love in a club' to a girl they don't know, and how girls look good naked. Which, yes, is what alot of songs are about these days. And they don't feature stupid tweety-like birds in the background (Ironik, Akon, etc etc). Shaant demonstrates talent in his Myspace blog, and Ok Ok, so it rhymes.. Why does that matter? They're interesting to read!
In 'Back To School To Prove To Daddy' (posted some time ago..) Shaant talks about how he was an outcast at school and students nowadays shouldn't take any notice of the popular bullsh*t that is High School today, 'cause it just fucks you up in the long run. T.R.U.E. This, I say with confidence, is not shitty.
CiWWAF, sure, may have their moments of 'I'm in a famous band so fuck you' but overall they do seem nice, and they appreciate how lucky they are to be in the position they are in when some bands are seriously struggling out there.
Maybe you should, instead of writing about how crap they are, (based on a quick flick through some possibly cocky things band members have said, and a half-hearted listen to a few songs) listen to Rotation properly, read ALL of some interviews, and then re-write your post.
- Although, if you do know what you're talking about, and you do REALLY dislike them, I don't have a problem with that. Kthx. |

Yo you guys are most definitaley amazing When i saw the band what i though was this is probably gonna be the next band i fall in love with. (trust me doesn't happen to often). I love P!ATD, MCR, RHCP and a couple more bands those are the first 3 to come to mind though because i just heard songs by them lol. I like a billion million other bands homes. Don't get me wrong skizzle music is awesome and i appreciate all types. I just don't love some music so much that i want to learn alot about them. Usually i'm content with just knowing some songs. Offline | shaant, you are the most amazing lyricist since Ian Curtis.
please dont turn out like him.
ever think of naming a song "Julia" ?
i have to admit, the first time i heard rotation, i didnt like it. but, i love blood rush SO much that i knew i just needed to give it a chance. so, i put on my headphones, and listened to it about twenty times on repeat while on a loooooong road trip, and i have to say, AMAZING.
Blood rush still owns, but i think that the overall theme of rotation is really powerful. that, and i still can't get Do What You Do stuck out of my head.
also, i went to see THE YOUNG WILD THINGS tour, aswell as the SIMPLE PLAN tour, and they were both just... just... about ten thousand times better than christmas morning. THANKYOU.
THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU.
you guys have so much stage presence.
oh, and i'm gonna wear my red cute is what we aim for shirt to school tomorow :)
i am a diehard fan. on the very top of my "life list" ... list, is "have cute is what we aim for write a song about me, or with my name whispered in one fo them, atleast.
JULIA. or if you prefer something a little more origional, my middle name is ASHLENE, so you can use that.
but personalization would really take away the effect for all the other people listening to it, wouldn't it?
probably.
thats it. YOU ARE A SAINT. please keep those witty little quips coming :) |
