Since 2005, the performance schedule for Omaha-based group After the fall has taken the five-man band to cities both near and far: Kansas City, Lawrence, Minneapolis, Sioux City, Sioux Falls and Des Moines, to name a few.
Much like the highways and byways that After the fall has traveled for gigs large and small, the band’s members have dramatically changed direction, as well. Their new album, You Don’t Have to Sleep to Dream, is a significant and notable change from their previous sound. It’s an unexpected departure that After the fall hopes fans will welcome with open ears and open arms.
“Our sound has changed a lot since we formed in 2005,” said Justin Eatherton (drums and vocals). “For this album we weren’t on a schedule, so we had the ability to really try out different sounds and work at our own pace. That attention to detail really shows.”
For a few of the tracks, the band recorded selected segments of the audio inside Derek Stearns’ Omaha home. The rest of the album was recorded at The Faint’s Enamel Studios in downtown Omaha.
Stearns (guitar and vocals) said the new sounds of After the fall are so different that band members even considered changing their name. You Don’t Have to Sleep to Dream is a sizable departure from their 2007 EP, We Invented a World. The sound is energetic and aggressive, yet dynamic and deep at the same time. Fans are treated to a large sound with lyrics that speak volumes of love and life.
After the fall’s influences range from Madina Lake and Taking Back Sunday, to Anberlin, The Used and Story of the Year. In 2008 mtvU voted the band the best rock on college campuses throughout the Midwest, representing students at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
The band is thoughtful at not just creating their music, but marketing it, as well. With social media Web sites allowing musicians of all talents to promote their sound, After the fall is cautious and careful to showcase their sounds in the truest possible forms, giving fans the opportunity to embrace their music.
Recording of You Don’t Have to Sleep to Dream took place between November 2008 and May 2009. The band’s first full-length, 13-track album is scheduled for release in early 2010.
