The Harry Potter Alliance is a charity organization that well....here's their mission statement:

Mission Statement

The Harry Potter Alliance (HPA) is a 501c3 nonprofit that takes an outside-of-the-box approach to civic engagement by using parallels from the Harry Potter books to educate and mobilize young people across the world toward issues of literacy, equality, and human rights. Our mission is to empower our members to act like the heroes that they love by acting for a better world. By bringing together fans of blockbuster books, TV shows, movies, and YouTube celebrities we are harnessing the power of popular culture toward making our world a better place. Our goal is to make civic engagement exciting by channeling the entertainment-saturated facets of our culture toward mobilization for deep and lasting social change. - http://thehpalliance.org/

Well, I got together a bunch of Wizard Rock bands and we made a compilation CD called A Hogwarts Halloween. All proceeds will go to benefit the organization. The record can be purchased in digital form at http://slytherinsoundtrack.weebly.com under the A Hogwarts Halloween tab

It can be streamed at http://www.myspace.com/ahogwartshalloween

A physical edition is forthcoming

Harry Potter Alliance Benefit (a.k.a. donation to charity)

Hello,

Slytherin Soundtrack is putting together a Harry Potter-Halloween themed album to benefit the organization the Harry Potter Alliance. All proceeds will go to charity.

Submissions need to be in by October 13th. I understand this is short notice but originally the idea was to make this for fun. However, making it for charity seemed like a good idea and so here we are. Please send your song to Brett150@missouristate.edu

The song needs to be Harry Potter and Halloween themed. That's it!

Hope you can participate. At the moment we have Stephanie and the Quaffles, Xenophillius, The First Task is Dragons and Go! Go! Gryfinndor ready to submit material.

~ Slytherin Soundtrack

AP.Net version:

Alright, I'm sure most people browsing AP have no clue what wizard rock is. If you do, great! If you're in a wrock band then perhaps you can help.

The Harry Potter Alliance is a non-profit organization that does tons of good stuff:

http://www.thehpalliance.org/

Basically, we're putting together an album of Harry Potter-Halloween themed songs. Proceeds will be donated to the HPA. If you are not in a wrock band, why not start? You can write a song and submit it.

Wizard Rock!!!

In early 2007, I was anticipating the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. To pass the time, I had delved into the world of wizard rock. Wizard rock is simply Harry Potter inspired music. Some of the more prominent wizard rock bands are Harry and the Potters, Draco and the Malfoys, The Whomping Willows, Oliver Boyd and the Rememberalls and The Remus Lupins.

Now this post is gonna be like an open confessional in which I will be about half embarrassed and half proud.

I started a wizard rock project called Prophets of Godric's Hollow. As PoGH, I recorded The Prophecy, Weasel King & The Mudblood, On Eating Bertie Bott's, Harry Potter Wrocks, We Were Wizards, Death Eater Madness, Dark Lord Rising, PoGH Soundtrack and finally Dorm Room Sessions. These were recorded fast and loose and the quality varied. I attempted different types of music such as hip hop, electronica, alternative, death metal (?!!!), rock, etc. Eventually, I discarded this project after over two years of making music and releasing it free on Myspace.

http://www.myspace.com/prophetsgh

Before I ended my project, I made a "short film" which was basically me talking about the music I had made. Now as the end of my first year of college approached, I saw Motion City Soundtrack live in my hometown. That came in conjunction with an urge to get back into wrock music. Thus, I created Slytherin Soundtrack which was initially to be an instrumental wrock band. Well, the instrumental thing got a little boring and so I did some collaborations with other wrock artists like The First Task is Dragons, Miss Parkinson and Leth I Fold. Plus, a cameo by Prophets of Godric's Hollow which was myself singing on a song. Well, it's no real secret that I was behind PoGH, but it case it wasn't obvious to anyone out there....yeah. Also, Dumbledore's Army and Hogwarts Hotel...where you at? We were supposed to bust out some collabs.

Anyway, recently I decided to slow down Slytherin Soundtrack by speeding it up. I have put out two EPs recently, We Have it Wrocked and Music to Get Passed a Three Headed Dog. I had initially planned to do seven EPs leading up the the new HP film, however, I decided that was too ambitious for me. Thus, I settled on three. Then I got the idea to release ONE LAST full length by Slytherin Soundtrack. This would be self-published and able to be purchased (i.e. physical copy). Although, I expect to have very modest sales (my albums averaged about fifty downloads across the board).

So, that's what I'm going to do. Slytherin Soundtrack & The Rogue Bludger will be available in the next couples months. Yet, I thought more about PoGH. Then, I decided to release a compilation record of PoGH songs under the Slytherin Soundtrack name. So, that's what I'm going to do.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_gulf_oil_spill

The comments on this article make me want to puke. While I love the United States, there are so many people who live here that I have the misfortune to call my fellow countrymen. One, the ignorance in this comment alone is appaling:

Only 11 lives were lost and some environmental damage and income were temporary lost... People care about minor things like that but do not care about millions of people dying of starvation.

Of course, people care about starvation. Thousands of people care but it's not like there should only be concentration on one subject at a time. The world is moving way too fast and is far too complex to just say, "Well, screw the oil spill. I got to feed some starving kids in the Sudan."

There's far too many more comments to pick out.

End rant.

13 Albums That Shaped my Musical Taste

Inspired by one of those silly tag your friends deals from FB, I decided to further talk about how the 13 albums I selected as being highly influential in my musical taste came to be.

Before I picked up Green Day's American Idiot in eighth grade, I did not personally make my own musical choices. As a young lad, I enjoyed the current flavor of mainstream pop which often included N*Sync, Backstreet Boys, and a nice collection of Now: That's What I Call Music. As I grew older, I would listen to my mother's collection of Disturbed, Godsmack, Metallica, AC/DC, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, etc. Then I heard "American Idiot" on the radio one day, and I was enthralled. What was this music? I didn't quite know but I knew I liked it. Perhaps my angsty teenage self found a home in Armstrong's "fuck the world" and "fuck Bush" attitude.

In my ninth grade year, I was introduced to Nine Inch Nails and With Teeth. I had enjoyed the singles "Closer" and "Head Like A Hole" before but had never looked into the man behind them all. Trent Reznor revolutionized how I looked at what rock music could be. That same summer when I loved jamming out to videos of "Only" and "The Hand That Feeds", I also saw a video for a song called "The Suffering". And I hated it. In addition, I was also introduced to Death Cab for Cutie that summer with their song "Soul Meets Body". Yeah, Plans is on my list.

Towards the end of the year, I had begun listening to Pink Floyd. I started out with the greatest hits compilation Echoes and then bought Dark Side of the Moon. Dark Side was a whole new world to me, and opened the door of progressive and experimental rock to me. I sought out progressive rock bands, which also led me to Rush, King Crimson and The Mars Volta. Frances the Mute remains one of my favorite records today.

As my ninth grade year ended, I heard a song on the radio that was a bombastic adrenaline rush. It was Coheed and Cambria's "Welcome Home" from their record (short hand) From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness. That summer, I bought SSTB and IKS to listen to while driving five hours to a family reunion. As well as a leaked demo entitled "Blood Machine" which I put on a mix tape.

Throughout high school, I had begun listening to classic rock a great deal and Led Zeppelin was at the top of that list. IV was a real stand out to me, although II is in a close second.

My sophomore year introduced me to two real big bands in my life. Protest the Hero and Say Anything. Odd combination? Well, I picked up Kezia on a whim through BMG Music Club and I was hooked. This opened me to a wide swath of metal bands which somehow also led me to Opeth's Ghost Reveries, although they are very different metal styles. I saw the video for "I Can Get Sexual Too!" on Fuse, and I immediately downloaded "Alive with the Glory of Love" (although I didn't know it was also a single at the time). Max's lyrical skills and passion impressed me greatly, and I went ahead and ordered the record. Say Anything remains one of my favorite bands (October 26th, woot woot).

My junior year, I came into a band named Murder by Death and another named Modest Mouse. I was attending a Clutch concert which Murder by Death was opening for. I picked up In Bocca Al Lupo and I was taken. I think I said to myself "This is the best record I've ever heard!" when I first listened to it. I had heard "Float On" in my eighth grade year, and I liked it. Though I didn't press myself to find out more about Modest Mouse. Then, I heard "Dashboard" on Fuse (I know) and I decided to pre-order We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank and I also got Good News. After getting WWDBTSES in the mail, I went out and bought all their records I could find. Now my MM collection is borderline creepy.

Lastly, I fell into an indie rock phase in my senior year. One band I clung to was Band of Horses and their record Cease to Begin. It was beautiful.
