I've wanted a full-fledged recommendation engine since I started this website. We're very close to having one that will be customized for users that let us know what bands they like (ie: following them) and can learn from staff members and grow with new music being released. For example, when The Republic of Wolves releases an album and I think, "hey, they kinda remind me of Brand New" - I can plug them into the system to show up for Brand New fans.
(Note: the image being used is just a default image because all the artist profile images aren't done yet).

I know you probably get a thousand of these annoying little requests that would be harder to implement than they seem(like this one), but have you ever thought of adding an option with which users with accounts can block news for certain artists off of the news feed, the way we can with other posters? Like, say there's a Brokencyde post and I don't feel like facepalming over seeing it get 100 replies, so I click on the post and click something like "Block News from This Artist"? Just a way to trim the fat off of the homepage a little. Recommended News is a great feature, but I still discover so many great bands on the homepage that I don't wanna hide in there lol.
