FALL OUT BOY HAVE SHIT PRODUCERS
FALL OUT BOY HAVE SHIT PRODUCERS

If you haven't guessed it already, I'm talking about the 'Loudness Wars'.

And what are the Loudness Wars, and what does it have to do with Fall Out Boy you ask?

Basically, when a record goes in to be mixed, backround noises are eliminated and the volumes of certain intruments are changed. BUT, nowadays the volumes of all the instruments are being increased to the point of them sounding slurred together, and the entire song sounds loud the whole way through, rather than being softer in the verses and then louder in the chorus. This is what I like to call bad dynamic compression, and it is the fault of producers and mixers.

One would assume that if you enter the music industry and choose a career such as a producer or mixer,...[read more]

so, not to rain on your rant, but your kinda wrong. im an engineer at a studio in hollywood and i record records for a living. when i and every other engineer tracks a record we get a good level to tape. then when we mix we never cross 0 dbvu on the meters. and for dynamics, i spent 4 weeks straight automating a 5 song ep just so it would have lots of presences and dynamics. so, i know you wanna blame someone for the new fall out boy record sucking, thats the bands fault. its actually the lables fault. even when it goes to, say mr. ted jensen to get mastered he gets all the info from the label. same with me. i get a call from the a&r telling me what the record should sound like. i've worked on lots of records and i get good levels........ so i can see you don't really know about how records are made, along with 90% of the ipod wearing idiots in the world. also i think it was neil arvon who produced that last two fob records, take a look a his track record, he knows whats up he has sold in the i think 40 million bracket of records.

Yeah I gotta agree with you - Neal Avron is the man.

And OK, I'll take some humble pie and say I'm blaming the wrong person as far as who's responsible for shit sound.

You sound like a good engineer though. I'm totally all for spending 4 weeks making an EP sound good - that's what I call good musicianship.

But I'm still gonna stick to my guns that the dyn. comp. is shocking and the louder the record - the worse the quality.

Good points from the engineer. I believe yeah it's the mastering. They are mastering certain records so loudly. It does ruin the dynamics. Recent albums ruined by this are The Rocket Summer, Augustana. Then you listen to an album like Coldplay's new one and you go, thank you for not hurting my ears.

I would also agree that's probably not the mastering guys fault. It's all label people telling them what to do. But at the same time, if I was them I would tell them no. I won't master your album if your going to ruin it. I recently saw the guy who did Metallica's new record call it shit because of the way they asked him to master it, and apparently the album sounds better in Guitar Hero. Go figure.

But the main point is yes, please stop mastering albums too loud. If we want it louder, we'll turn it up.
