Musical Genius - Given Talent
Musical Genius - Given Talent
03/27/09 at 10:53 PM by hockeyguitar99
So, my Musical Genius blogs, which were initially meant to be just a space to explore ideas that would be useless in my reviews, but still interested me and were worth my time. But from this, I started to think about it with a different factor. How does god given talent play into it?

For example. one of the first examples I presented was Morrissey. I do believe that he is in fact a musical genius, but his talent is not something to be ignored. His voice is simply fabulous, and it's hard to believe that something that good can be taught. A next is Thom Yorke. Again, the man is a genius and I see no doubt in my mind about that. However, his haunting, beautiful, unique voice has really been the only consistent sound that Radiohead have had. His voice is distinct, and is part of...[read more]

There is nothing consistent about RH and that's why they are so great. They change so often and it's always near perfect. If you are saying the vocals are the only thing going for them, that's off too. The drummer is one of the greatest of all time, and not flashy about it. The Greenwoods are musical genius' as well especially Johnny. They are the perfect complete band. And you might want to be careful with "God given." I'm not sure what that means. That he has a voice that happens to be nice to listen to? That he was ambitious enough to actually put it to use? Or that he can write melody's that fit him and flow perfectly?
Good ideas, but build on them a little.
The only thing required to be a "musical genius" is to be able to feel the music and play an instrument or sing well enough to express yourself through your own. If you happen to be expressing things that other people can relate to, but they never really put the feelings into words or music, you get labeled as a genius. In a sense, you just have to feel it.

You couldn't have twisted my words and taken them out of context more than you just did. That was actually impressive.

I'm not going to lie, I've been high for the past 2 days straight. My "understanding of things I read level" has probably been dropping steadily all weekend. And I think that came off as more of put down than it was meant to, I was just trying to understand where you were going with that. Sorry 'bout the twistin'

Fair enough. Basically, I wasn't saying the vocals were the only good thing about Radiohead, not by a long shot, I was saying that they were Radiohead's defining quality because they were really the only consistent thing album to album. The rest of their sound was stylistically different.
