|Pop-punk is a genre that takes a lot of shit for being simple, cheesy, and not real music. Where anyone comes up with that last one, I donít know. But yes, pop-punk is simple and yes, pop-punk can be cheesy, but who cares? I have always loved pop-punk for those reasons, simply because it works. Most pop-punk songs are short enough to where the power chords donít become annoying and still remain catchy, which is good because if they become too long then yes, it can get annoying. But to say itís not real music? I would like someone to explain that to me.|
Staying on topic though; whether it have been blink-182ís Enema of the State, which is the first pop-punk album I bought, or Good Charlotteís The Young & the Hopeless, pop-punk saved my life. Enema of the State never failed to make me smile at the tongue-in-cheek lyrics, and The Young & the Hopeless described every second, every moment of my life at one point when I was going through shit. You see, pop-punk doesnít have to be simple cheesy lyrics like ďSay it ainít so//I will not go//turn the lights off//carry me home,Ē they can branch into something far more spectacular like ďIím handed a book about instructions on when I should know to go//tracing my fingers down the binding I get cold//ícause Iíve been this awful shade of lonely since your reasons left the room//and Iíd see everything get warmer if you decide to follow suit.Ē
A huge reason as to why I have continued to love pop-punk to this day is the diversity that has come about. Watching and listening to New Found Glory make the transition from Sticks and Stones to Catalyst, watching blink-182 go from Take Off Your Pants and Jacket to the self-titled/untitled, and even watching certain flops such as Good Charlotte after The Young and the Hopeless were all phenomenal. I donít know what it is, but I couldnít stray from pop-punk. Pop-punk was kind of a friend that never let you down. Yes, there were flops and break-ups but even so, new bands arose like Four Year Strong and Set Your Goals that were there to mend that empty void. While no single band filled the hole blink-182 left when they first broke-up, the combination of previous bands plus Man Overboard, Transit, City Lights, Valencia and more, all helped equally.
Finally, to wrap this up because I actually have to get back on doing an assignment for homework (funny, I can write four paragraphs in twenty minutes, but canít write one for school in an hour), pop-punk is something that doesnít need to be taken serious, and it speaks to you. The main ďpopĒ part of pop-punk is itís lyrics, which are often about high school, girls, along those lines. Examples: Taking Back Sundayís Tell All Your Friends, Brand Newís Your Favorite Weapon and Man Overboardís Real Talk. But bands canít certainly take it to a whole new level of lyricism; Mayday Parade, Go Radio, Alkaline Trio are just a few that come to mind. Itís all pop-punk, though, and itís all beautiful, so if you canít get into pop-punk, I do feel sorry for you because it can vary all over the place.
Standing on the edge of morning, scent of sex and New Found Glory playing as sheís pulling back her hairÖ
From veterans the Offspring, New Found Glory, blink-182, Simple Plan, Good Charlotte, Something Corporate, Bowling for Soup and MxPx to the newbies of Man Overboard, Transit, City Lights, State Champs, Four Year Strong, Me vs. Hero, Major League, Living With Lions and everyone in between; I love you all. You either got me into pop-punk or have kept my interest in pop-punk for all these years. You have also solidified pop-punk a special place in my heart, and Iím confident I will never give up on pop-punk thanks to you.
