The moment I live for is when I push play on a new album, there's a brief pause, a slight click of static ... and the music starts. The wash of sound rips around the room and in flashes I'm reminded of what makes music so special. The feelings it evokes, the emotions it pulls forth, and the ability to divert and demand attention to every detail. It's that feeling that powers me each day.
The new Hot Water Music album is an absolute beast of a record.
Front to back it's pure rock-n-roll. Chuck and Chris sound as good as they ever have, the production is brilliant, and I'd argue the songs are as good as the band's ever written. And we all know that's saying something. However, this album just feels more cohesive - more time and effort put into the structure and overall vibe of the record. I've always had this test for my feelings on a new album ... the time it takes for me to start sliding the volume notch is usually directly related to my enjoyment of the album. If you make it through the first track without turning it up to 11, air-guitaring around the room like a fucking moron, and wishing you could sing-a-long ... you're a better man than me.
There's a definite Foo Fighter vibe on this one, maybe with a little Menzingers and Gaslight. Shit, if there's any justice in this world "Boy, You're Gonna Hurt Someone" will be an anthem and this will be the biggest band on the Rise Records roster. Please let there be justice. One of the best songs I've heard this year. One of the best albums I've heard this year. Will un-doubtable be somewhere in my top 10 by the end of the year ... and it's the kind of album that defines where my musical tastes are these days. I'm all over the place in what I listen to -- you know how I am -- but this album flat out defines what my ears want to hear.
