paper tiger or trojan horse? 11/05/08 at 03:17 PM by kofiadrian | | It wore off. Wore off faster than I expected. I imagined this feel-good aurora would last a few days, possibly a few weeks. It hasn't. The feelings of excitement and amazement that accompanied me last night are no more. I woke up today and felt slightly apprehensive, pensive even. It was at that moment that it hit me: barack obama is either going to be an American version of new labour, or a true sign of change and fortitude. I want to believe that he will be the latter, that his administration will finally bring America that change and reform we so desperately need. However, I can't fully believe this. Despite the excitement, despite the historical implications of this moment in time, I am still suspicious. I am still suspicious of barack obama. Not in the "he's an Arab-gonna destroy America-socialist" manner, but rather in the "is this really too good to be true" mantra.I wonder if this whole situation is just nothing more than what we've seen before, just in a more cryptic, subtle way. Is obama the candidate of spin, just in a different, less forceful way? Is this message of hope and change just an empty gesture? Is barack obama using the same old sloganeering just to present a front that, on the outside, is fresh and invigorating, yet in actuality is nothing more than a way of appealing to the disillusioned? All of these questions swirl inside my mind as I write this. I get the feeling that I am part of the silent few that have these feelings, these feelings of excitement and caution altogether. I haven't been more eager for a new era of anything to ever happen in my life. But with all of this eagerness comes a thought that I think all Americans should have right now: is Barack Hussein Obama a paper tiger? Or a Trojan horse? We’ll just have to be patient and see what happens. And wait. | |
