The Smurfette Principle
07/24/11 at 09:44 PM by AP_Punk
In honor of the upcoming, blasphemous live-action Smurfs film, I present thee with a rad analysis of the movie trope that takes its name from the series:

You speak the truth, Anita Sarkeesian.

The Codes of Gender: Identity & Performance in Pop Culture
07/19/11 at 04:26 PM by AP_Punk
I recently came across this documentary on Free Speech TV and I totally recommend it for anyone and everyone - an enlightening, informative, and rabble-rousing watch!

Quote:
The Codes of Gender applies the late sociologist Erving Goffman's groundbreaking analysis of advertising to the contemporary commercial landscape, showing how one of American popular culture's most influential forms communicates normative ideas about masculinity and femininity.

In striking visual detail, The Codes of Gender explores Goffman's central claim that gender ideals are the result of ritualized cultural performance, uncovering a remarkable pattern of masculine and feminine displays and poses. It looks beyond advertising as a medium that simply sells products, and beyond analyses of gender that focus on biological difference or issues of objectification and beauty, to provide a clear-eyed view of the two-tiered terrain of identity and power relations.

With its sustained focus on how our perceptions of what it means to be a man or a woman get reproduced and reinforced on the level of culture in our everyday lives, The Codes of Gender is certain to inspire discussion and debate across a range of disciplines.

Here's a preview:

and you can stream the abridged 50 minute version here. Get into it.

Moshing is only acceptable when done by cats listening to Bracewar
07/09/11 at 08:47 PM by AP_Punk

Quote:
The dominant tone of hardcore is ‘aggressive’, which in Western society has masculine connotations. This isn’t simply a question of gender, it is a question of ‘masculinity’, a descriptive tool used to create ‘male’ as powerful and domineering. It is this overtly articulated masculinity, I believe, that creates the privileging of space we experience in the specific public space that is the hardcore show, and specifically in dancing at shows. I believe that the way space is used at the show is one of the many ways that the ‘aggressive masculinity’ discourse is perpetuated in the hardcore community. I also believe that it doesn’t have to be this way. Critical self-awareness should cause people to realise their actions restrict others, and while it may lead to a transformation of the way space is used, I feel it would be a positive alternative to the current state of play, where many watch passively and a few actively engage in a physical way.

I recommend Lady Gaga take her on-stage antics to G.G. Allin levels of redonkulous. Hard to say what he would've done if he had a vagina, but now we'd be able to find out, if only Gaga would carry the torch he defecated on!

facepalm
06/08/11 at 04:11 PM by AP_Punk
In response to Aaron Scott's article on sexism:

I don't understand why females expect respect from a scene that is pretty much intended to be an outlet for broken boys to vent.

If girls don't want sexism, stop breaking boys' hearts.

Stranger than fiction

It's pretty silly and facepalmy when some people say that they don't like female vocalists in bands. It's even pretty sillier and facepalmier when females say that.

"Boys and girls in America have such a sad time together; sophistication demands that they submit to sex immediately without proper preliminary talk. Not courting talk--real straight talk about souls, for life is holy and every moment is precious."

"You Know What Makes Me Feel Unsafe?"

Quote:
When you’re the only guy in the pit who doesn’t get the message to not fly full force into someone half your size or strength. When you take your shirt off at a show. When you ask me if I’m “IN the band or WITH the band” after a male bandmate says the four of us are all IN the band. When you tell me I play guitar well for a girl. When you say that all the guys want to fuck the girl in that band. When you make a rape joke. When you use the word bitch or call someone a slut. The list doesn’t end there. Now do you think the scene isn’t sexist?

A new editorial by Lauren Denitzio, calling out sexism in the scene

That I Didn't Write a Comedy Piece

Quote:
The other day while sounding out the words on a Web site called The Rumpus, I saw this article asking for women to submit more comedy pieces. So I put down my giant chocolate bar, stopped crying, and thought, yes, that is what I will do.

And waited
01/23/11 at 02:50 PM by AP_Punk
"We waited and waited. All of us. Didn't the shrink know that waiting was one of the things that drove people crazy? People waited all their lives. They waited to live, they waited to die. They waited in line to buy toilet paper. They waited in line for money. And if they didn't have any more they waited in longer lines. You waited to go to sleep and then you waited to awaken. You waited to get married and then you waited to get divorced. You waited for it to rain, you waited for it to stop. You waited to eat and then you waited to eat again. You waited in a shrink's office with a bunch of psychos and you wondered if you were one."

Darrell Issa, Step Away From the Corporations

Remember “freedom fries”? That’s what the House Republicans, when they were last in the majority, renamed french fries, after France refused to support the invasion of Iraq. It seems like renaming fries might be just about the extent of food regulation that some in Congress are willing to support.
