Nintendo At The Vans Warped Tour
When it was first announced that Nintendo would be a major sponsor of this year’s Vans Warped Tour I was more then a little shocked. It didn’t seem like a good fit. Why would the biggest video game company in the world want to attach themselves to a tour full of underdeveloped bands? It took me a while to remember that Nintendo has a product out right now that you need to see to believe, the 3DS. Armed with a giant tent full of 3DS demos and a staff eager to educate attendees of the tour, Nintendo’s presence at the Warped Tour might be one of the smartest moves they make all year.
It’s hard to miss Nintendo at this year’s edition of the Vans Warped tour, they have not one but two tents and are even sponsoring one of the larger stages. They are also handing out temporary tattoos which by the end of the long day you see plastered all over the concert goers. The tent holding the 3DS demo kiosks is by far one of the larger tents on the festival grounds. Inside you’ll find plenty of 3DS’ running full versions of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Super Monkey Ball, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries, Super Street Fighter IV, Dead or Alive Dimensions, and the staff is having a blast showing people the AR games.
I got hands on time with a few of the games, but since none of them were very new or exclusive to the tour, I’ll just say this. Super Street Fighter IV looks fantastic in 3D, Dead or Alive Dimensions felt unnecessary in every way, and Resident Evil: The Mercenaries was pretty boring and didn’t effectively use the 3D. AR games are still fantastic but I have a feeling we aren’t going to see anything new in AR department anytime soon.
The most interesting thing about my time in the booth is the way the people manning it were handling perspective players. When I picked up a 3DS that was running Street Fighter I was immediately approached by one of the staff. He then started asking me if I like fighting games and if they were “my favorite type of game”. I told him I played all types of games and that fighting games weren’t my favorite and that I wasn’t even good at them. That’s when he pointed out that most special moved good be performed on the touch screen. I assured him that these were things I knew and he left me alone, but it was cool to see how educated they were about the hardware and the software.
He then asked my wife what kind of games she liked, and when she responded “Angry Birds” he took her on a tour of the AR games. Which seems to be the thing people in the booth were most excited about, and another reason why I still don’t own a 3DS yet. There’s no real compelling games for the system. AR isn’t worth $249 to me.
A couple of minutes into my time with Dead or Alive Dimensions the same guy asked me what I thought. I told him “the 3D seemed unnecessary” and he agreed with me. Which quite honestly shocked me a bit. I figured he would want to hype me up on the 3D and get me excited for the system. It was pretty refreshing when he didn’t try to explain why the 3D actually made the game better.
What did the bands on the tour think of the 3DS? Well the reaction was mixed to say the least. Josh from The Wonder Years was a big fan of the system and its 3D capabilities “it’s unlike anything I’ve ever played before....its a cool thing”. On the other hand indie rapper MC Lars, not such a fan “it kind of gave me a headache”. Although he did say that maybe kids who are just now getting into video games might find it to be cool. These mixed emotions on the system from within the bands on the tour seem to match the sentiment in most gamers. It’s either a gimmick you can’t stand, or it’s the future of gaming.
At first Nintendo at Warped Tour didn’t make a whole lot of sense but after watching concert goers stream in and out of Nintendo’s tent and watch the look on their faces when they picked up a 3DS for the first time it all clicked. Nintendo needs to get this device out into the world and in front of as many faces as possible. While it may not be the target demographic for the system’s buyers all these kids have parents and now their kids will ask for a 3DS or show their parents the glasses free 3D. It’s hard to believe it works but the proof is there in the big Nintendo tent at this year’s Vans Warped Tour. If the tour is coming to your town be sure to stop by and check it out it’s one of the best ways to get a large amount of time with the device and truly decide whether or not the 3DS is for you.
Well that's it. I hope you enjoyed the Jim Plachy era of the Absolute Punk Dot Net video game roundup. I weep for the next poor bastard who has to do this. If you want, you can follow me on Twitter. | | Video Game Roundup 5/15/2011 |
So last week there was some confusion over whether or not I really knew if the PlayStation Network was down. I was being sarcastic. But I can understand how some people may not know I was trying to be funny, so this week to avoid any confusion, I'm going to put a smiley face after every story. That way we all know I'm just joking around. Alright? Ok.

That's it, hopefully I can make it two in a row next week. In the meantime, follow Four Player Co-Op on Twitter, and please watch our end of the year 2010 video special. We worked really hard on it and don't you want to spend an hour looking at five nerds discussing their favorite video games as they get progressively drunker? I thought so. Also, listen to Bullshot! It's like reading this round up only with your ears! Ok, bye. | |
