Nintendo At The Vans Warped Tour

When it was first announced that Nintendo would be a major sponsor of this yearís Vans Warped Tour I was more then a little shocked. It didnít seem like a good fit. Why would the biggest video game company in the world want to attach themselves to a tour full of underdeveloped bands? It took me a while to remember that Nintendo has a product out right now that you need to see to believe, the 3DS. Armed with a giant tent full of 3DS demos and a staff eager to educate attendees of the tour, Nintendoís presence at the Warped Tour might be one of the smartest moves they make all year.

Itís hard to miss Nintendo at this yearís edition of the Vans Warped tour, they have not one but two tents and are even sponsoring one of the larger stages. They are also handing out temporary tattoos which by the end of the long day you see plastered all over the concert goers. The tent holding the 3DS demo kiosks is by far one of the larger tents on the festival grounds. Inside youíll find plenty of 3DSí running full versions of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Super Monkey Ball, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries, Super Street Fighter IV, Dead or Alive Dimensions, and the staff is having a blast showing people the AR games.

I got hands on time with a few of the games, but since none of them were very new or exclusive to the tour, Iíll just say this. Super Street Fighter IV looks fantastic in 3D, Dead or Alive Dimensions felt unnecessary in every way, and Resident Evil: The Mercenaries was pretty boring and didnít effectively use the 3D. AR games are still fantastic but I have a feeling we arenít going to see anything new in AR department anytime soon.

The most interesting thing about my time in the booth is the way the people manning it were handling perspective players. When I picked up a 3DS that was running Street Fighter I was immediately approached by one of the staff. He then started asking me if I like fighting games and if they were ďmy favorite type of gameĒ. I told him I played all types of games and that fighting games werenít my favorite and that I wasnít even good at them. Thatís when he pointed out that most special moved good be performed on the touch screen. I assured him that these were things I knew and he left me alone, but it was cool to see how educated they were about the hardware and the software.

He then asked my wife what kind of games she liked, and when she responded ďAngry BirdsĒ he took her on a tour of the AR games. Which seems to be the thing people in the booth were most excited about, and another reason why I still donít own a 3DS yet. Thereís no real compelling games for the system. AR isnít worth $249 to me.

A couple of minutes into my time with Dead or Alive Dimensions the same guy asked me what I thought. I told him ďthe 3D seemed unnecessaryĒ and he agreed with me. Which quite honestly shocked me a bit. I figured he would want to hype me up on the 3D and get me excited for the system. It was pretty refreshing when he didnít try to explain why the 3D actually made the game better.

What did the bands on the tour think of the 3DS? Well the reaction was mixed to say the least. Josh from The Wonder Years was a big fan of the system and its 3D capabilities ďitís unlike anything Iíve ever played before....its a cool thingĒ. On the other hand indie rapper MC Lars, not such a fan ďit kind of gave me a headacheĒ. Although he did say that maybe kids who are just now getting into video games might find it to be cool. These mixed emotions on the system from within the bands on the tour seem to match the sentiment in most gamers. Itís either a gimmick you canít stand, or itís the future of gaming.

At first Nintendo at Warped Tour didnít make a whole lot of sense but after watching concert goers stream in and out of Nintendoís tent and watch the look on their faces when they picked up a 3DS for the first time it all clicked. Nintendo needs to get this device out into the world and in front of as many faces as possible. While it may not be the target demographic for the systemís buyers all these kids have parents and now their kids will ask for a 3DS or show their parents the glasses free 3D. Itís hard to believe it works but the proof is there in the big Nintendo tent at this yearís Vans Warped Tour. If the tour is coming to your town be sure to stop by and check it out itís one of the best ways to get a large amount of time with the device and truly decide whether or not the 3DS is for you.

Well that's it. I hope you enjoyed the Jim Plachy era of the Absolute Punk Dot Net video game roundup. I weep for the next poor bastard who has to do this. If you want, you can follow me on Twitter. Also, even though I don't write for them anymore keep checking out Four Player Co-Op because they are good dudes and deserve your eyeballs. Also, a huge thanks to Linda and Deborah and everyone else here who despite my wacky roundups never edited anything I wrote. I mean, I wrote some wacky shit, but it was always there intact each time. I had a lot of fun, thanks again.

Video Game Roundup 5/22/2011
05/22/11 at 09:06 AM by be mine
Hello, my name is Jim Plachy and I blog about video games. Once a week I come to AbsolutePunk Dot Net to roundup a fraction of the weeks video game news so people can comment about it. Or complain about it. Either way, here's a small amount of video game news. Be warned, it was a slow news week. E3 is right around the corner so most companies are waiting until then to unleash their news.

It looks like the PlayStation Store will be back next week. May 24th to be exact.

Sony has announced a package of free gifts if you're willing to come back to the PlayStation Network.

Is there going to be a God of War PSP collection on PlayStation 3?

Resistance 3's box art is fucking gorgeous.

The controller for Project Cafe might have a front-facing camera. Ugh, I can't wait for E3 so we can stop this.

Microsoft's E3 press conference will once again be shown on SpikeTV.

Here are the details for the Gears of War 3 Limited and Epic editions. Otherwise knows as the wait 2 months to get them half off editions.

A new trailer for Gears of War 3 will be shown during a soccer game.

It looks like the next time we see Alan Wake it will be exclusively on Xbox Live Arcade and it will be called Alan Wake: Night Springs.

Arma 3 has been announced for next Summer. If you like punishingly difficult military simulators, well......there you go.

Atari is dumping Cryptic the makers of Champions Online and Star Trek Online.

Hellgate: London, a game I loved to death is set to return with a closed beta sometime between June 3rd and 5th. If I had a PC I would be all over this shit.

There was a major update to Infinity Blade that added multiplayer, also for not much longer the game is only $2.99.

The Fallout: New Vegas Honest Hearts DLC is buggy. Wow. I can't believe it.

The first full trailer for Modern Warfare 3 will be shown on Monday between the 3rd and 4th quarters of the hoopball game.

Gotham City Imposters is a Batman game with guns. I'm not kidding.

Here's a look at Wake Island for Battlefield 3.

I don't get this at all.

Somebody last week said something about Madden, so I guess here's a Madden thing.

Ubisoft is working on movies.

Here's a new Dead Island trailer. It's sad.

Video Game Roundup 5/15/2011
05/15/11 at 10:07 AM by be mine
So last week there was some confusion over whether or not I really knew if the PlayStation Network was down. I was being sarcastic. But I can understand how some people may not know I was trying to be funny, so this week to avoid any confusion, I'm going to put a smiley face after every story. That way we all know I'm just joking around. Alright? Ok.

The PlayStation Network is back online for most territories. You'll have to download a patch and change the password on your account, but hey it's back and you can finally play games online again. You still can't buy things from the PlayStation Store, but this is better than nothing, right?

Starhawk the spiritual successor to Warhawk has finally been announced after years of rumors.

There might be a Heavenly Sword 2.

On the evening of June 6th Nintendo will release a firmware update for the 3DS that finally adds the long awaited eShop.

Starfox 64 3D will offer no online play, but will allow you to use the system's gyroscope to pilot the ship.

Microsoft bought Skype for 8.5 billion dollars. This is news to you, because it's coming to the Xbox 360.

The Spring update for the Xbox 360 will supposedly be rolled out in 6 waves starting on the 19th. Don't get too excited the only thing this does is make your system compatible with the new 360 disc format. Unless there is something they aren't telling us! DUN DUN DUN!

There's going to be more Alan Wake, but it wont be a sequel or DLC. Great.

Diablo 3 will get a beta in the third quarter of this year.

All DLC for The Witcher 2 will be free.

Hold on to your hats for the most shocking news all week! Modern Warfare 3 will be the next Call of Duty game and it will be out this November. If you want even more information you can check out Kotaku who spoiled the whole game all for the sake of some hits to their website! Good job guys!

Dark Souls is aiming for an October 11th release. If you pre-order the game you will automagically be upgraded to the collector's edition.

Later this Summer Warner Bros. will release MK Collection on XBLA and PSN. It will include the first 3 Mortal Kombat games.

Creative Assembly is working on a new Alien title, hopefully an RTS since that's what they do.

Activision will release a new James Bond game this year.

The Duke Nukem Forever demo is probably coming next week to those who joined the First Access Club.

Soul Calibur 5 is coming in 2012.

Hitman: Absolution is confirmed.

Bungie's new sister company Bungie Aerospace has trademarked the name Crimson for use on mobile phones. Curious.

Brink got a patch to fix lag problems, and Splash Damage promises that the first DLC pack for the game will be free.

Namco is working on a new Dragon Ball Z game for release this year.

Portal 2 got a level editor on Steam.

Blizzard donated 800,000 to the Make A Wish foundation from the sale of cosmetic pets.

Hybrid has been pushed back to 2012.

Ghost Recon Future Soldier will be out Q1 of 2012.

Crysis 2 gets the Retaliation map pack on 5/17

LA Noire

The Witcher 2

Fable III PC

Video Game Round Up 5/8/2011
05/08/11 at 09:55 AM by be mine
This weeks video game round up is for all the mothers out there. Which is exactly 0 of you. So this I dedicate this to none of you is basically what I'm saying.

I just found out today that I guess the PlayStation network has been down. Did you guys know about this? Apparently Sony has no idea when it's going to come back up, but the good news is that when the hackers use your credit card you'll be protected from fraudulent charges.

Sony Online Entertainment was also hacked, but apparently it was only an old database. So hopefully if you had a credit card tied to a Station account its expired by now.

Want to play Resistance 3 before anyone else? Pick up the Blu-Ray of Battle: Los Angeles.

As predicted the Wii will go down to $149 in a new bundle that includes Mario Kart instead of Wii Sports and a steering wheel to go along with it. Nintendo also introduced a line of Wii Selects a line of 5 year old games that are now $19.99 instead of $49.99. Seriously.

Nintendo's next system might have 8GB of on board flash memory and be able to output at 1080. I would hope at the very least it had these things.

A source tells Develop magazine that EA is the first developer to have dev kits for the new Xbox. EA says STFU we do not.

Microsoft has opened a new studio in Vancouver that is working on a AAA shooter for Kinect. This has lead many to believe that the title in question is a Halo game.

How about Portal 2, huh?

Bethesda has confirmed 3 new DLC packs for Fallout: New Vegas.

Burnout Crash is a top down game where you drive a car into intersections and try to cause property damage. It also includes UFOs and lobster monsters. Sounds like an iOS game to me, but it's rated for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Black Rock Studios experienced lay offs this week along with the sad news that there will be no Split/Second 2 for the time being. Which is a shame, because Split/Second was one of the best games of last year.

What is Gotham City Imposters?

A Saint's Row XBLA/PSN game was canned by THQ. Also, if you want to get a jump start on creating your Saint's Row The Third character you can pre-order Red Faction: Armageddon or wait a week for the free Saint's Row Initiation Station to be released on XBLA and PSN.

Dead Island will now be distributed by Square Enix in North America.

Rayman Origins was going to be an XBLA/PSN title, but it will now be a full retail title released this Holiday.

Ubisoft has announced Assassin's Creed: Revelation! It wraps up Ezio's story line and you play as Desmond and Altair as well. Seriously. Most anticipated game of the year right hurrrr. The game will be featured on the cover of this month's Game Informer.

The Darkness 2 is out on October 4th.

Mass Effect 3 will be out Q1 2012 BOOOOO! HISSSSS!!

Star Wars The Old Republic may not launch before March of 2012.

Lego Pirates of the Caribbean.

Yu Gi Oh! 5D World Championship 2011 or YGO!: 5D WC '11 for short.

MX Vs. ATV Alive

Virtua Tennis 4

Sorry if I left you guys hanging there for a couple of weeks, I had pressing matters to attend to. Hopefully I'm back in the saddle for a good long while now. Make sure you guys check out my website Four Player Co-Op and if you really want to, you can read my review of Conduit 2. You can also follow us on Twitter and subscribe to my podcast. It's fun, I promise! Until next week!

So, did you get a 3DS? I have to tell you that top screen is a hell of a drug. One look at it's crisp no glasses 3D and you get hooked. I had to lock myself in the bathroom for 2 days just to make sure I didn't run out and pre-order one, because quite frankly I'm not sure I need one, but man do I want one real bad.

My name is Jim Plachy, I am from the website Four Player Co-Op and I come here.......semi regularly to let you know about the video games. Let's go!

Wow, this has easily been the worst month of my life, so you'll have to excuse me for going missing for two weeks, but I'm back now and ready to talk about my favorite pastime, the video games!

inFAMOUS 2 hits shelves on June 7th, which is quite frankly the perfect time for it to come out, in the middle of the dry season. inFAMOUS came out around the same time in '09 and it was the only thing I played for months. I need to finish my "good" playthrough. There of course is going to be a crazy ass special edition that includes the sling back Cole wears on his back along with some other goodies. It will run you $99. There are also a ton of pre-order bonuses depending on where you pre-order.

Killzone 3 is going to come in a bunch of bundles including one that comes with a PS3 for $299. Gamestop has a few exclusives including one that includes a Move controller and Playstation Camera for $99.

The Xperia Play also known as the Playstation Phone is coming to Verizon this Spring.

Lego Pirates of the Caribbean will be released for the 3DS. PHEW!

Double Fine will be releasing a Sesame Street game for the Kinect.

Halo: Reach is getting a second map pack. It's called the Defiant map pack and it will be out in March. Three new maps developed by Halo 2 DLC map makers Certain Affinity are included and it will cost $10.

No Half-Life news. Again.

The first DLC pack for Castlevania: Lord of Shadow has been pushed back to March.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit is getting 3 DLC packs. One adds some new Porsche's, one adds new Lamborghini's, and one adds two new game modes. They all come out one week apart starting Tuesday/Wednesday and all cost $7.

Left 4 Dead 2 is getting new DLC "sometime after the release of Portal 2" in April. It's called Cold Stream and allows you to play the remaining 3 campaigns from the first Left 4 Dead and introduces the Cold Stream campaign which is being made by a member of the modding community.

Telltale Games announced a whole slew of new games. Including games based on the comic books The Walking Dead, and Fables. They will also continue their Hector: Badge of Carnage series that they started recently on iOS. Puzzle Agent will get a sequel and they also picked up the rights to make games in the King's Quest universe. The titles are expected to hit all the platforms where you download games. (XBLA, PSN, App Store, Steam, etc.)

Dead Island Trailer. What else is there to say at this point. Watch it.

THQ is going to make Voltron games.

When you beat a level in FEAR 3's single player campaign you can play it again as the co-op partner.

Dragon Age: Redemption is a new web series starring the Internet's own Felicia Day. You can watch a trailer here.

Here is the Duke Nukem Forever Balls of Steel edition.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is getting it's first paid pack of DLC. It's entitled The Da Vinci Disappearance and will include new single player missions and new maps and modes for multiplayer. It will cost you $10 and be out in March.

Clint Mansell is doing the score for Mass Effect 3.

Danger Close is already hard at work on a sequel to Medal of Honor.

That's it, hopefully I can make it two in a row next week. In the meantime, follow Four Player Co-Op on Twitter, and please watch our end of the year 2010 video special. We worked really hard on it and don't you want to spend an hour looking at five nerds discussing their favorite video games as they get progressively drunker? I thought so. Also, listen to Bullshot! It's like reading this round up only with your ears! Ok, bye.
