Behind the Artwork: Daybreak, Saves The Day
08/09/11 at 09:23 AM by troym03
DAYBREAK is thematically about acceptance. It's the third and final installment of the trilogy for Saves The Day that begins with anger and discontent (Sound The Alarm) and is followed by reflection and remorse (Under The Boards). The first two albums in the trilogy were set as outdoor landscapes, so to me it was obvious that the third and final chapter needed to follow suit. Saves The Day’s past album artwork in general have majorly had an “outdoor” theme (Can’t Slow Down, Stay What You Are, Sound The Alarm, Under The Boards). Even “In Reverie” hints at outdoor elements in Stephan Doitschinoff’s illustrations. The next thing I had to work out was finding a color scheme. Immediately I knew that DAYBREAK had to be white. The color white is linked to renewal, acceptance and hope amongst many other things. The outdoor theme and white palette were my anchors and starting point.

The next part of the process was to figure out what exactly the front cover would actually consist of. The sun breaking over the horizon seemed very appropriate. I could go into a huge rant about the symbolism in a rising sun, but I will spare you. Not only is it the literal visualization of the word DAYBREAK, but it also speaks to the tones and themes that the album is about. It is the start of a new day. The foggy/haziness hints at the aftermath from the previous destruction, as the dust settles so to speak. That element also ties back to the blown out look of STA.

After talking with the band, it became clear that I should incorporate more elements from the back catalog of the trilogy just like Chris does in his lyrics. To achieve this I added red and blue scratches and scribbles to capture the catharsis that is DAYBREAK while tipping the hat to the previous releases in the trilogy (STA is mostly reds and UTB is deep blues). The DAYBREAK artwork brings forth calmness and hope while tying in reflections of the past. There are other past elements that reoccur on different parts of the packaging. You will be able to see for yourself when the album is available in September. Until then, I hope you enjoy the cover!

Daybreak is released on September 13, 2011.
