| | New on Tuesday: Owl City - Ocean Eyes |

So every Tuesday I try to find a new album to listen to. Sometimes it's from one of my favorite bands (Nothing Personal, last week), and sometimes I'll find a new release from a band I don't know/ don't listen to.
This week I checked out the new Owl City album, Ocean Eyes. I've never really given Owl City much of a chance. Just a quick listen to a song or two from the first album, but I don't remember really enjoying it or anything. However, I was actually quite surprised by it.
The vocal delivery reminds me Matt from Relient K, with lots of auto-tune and effects on the vocals. It doesn't seem like the effects are to really hide anything, more used for just an effect. It mixes with the synth backgrounds really well.
Some of the songs have some weird themes, such as "Dental Care," which is about going to the dentist it seems. Again, surprisingly songs like this don't even come out as a joke, they work well with the whole sound and don't seem out of place. There's lots of metaphors throughout the album, and I found the lyrics to actually be overall pretty good.
Some of the better tracks include Cave In, Hello Seattle, and The Bird and the Worm(The chorus really reminds me of something that Relient K would do, driven by piano and guitar).
With bands like Never Shout Never starting to get picked up, it's good to see that there's still some pop/synth type bands that still come across as meaningful and sound good. Whether or not you've been a fan of Owl City in the past, check out the album. It's an overall happy feel good album. I don't think you'll be disappointed at all. | | Tags: Owl City, Ocean Eyes, Pop |
