Like Lions - Brand New @ Stubb's (10/19/14)

"Untitled 01." "Degausser." "Seventy Times 7." "Untitled 03." Fucking "Moshi Moshi."

I've seen Brand New a few times now (my all-time favorite show was off their tour with Hot Rod Circuit and Eisley), but I haven't seen them in quite a few years. As far as I'm concerned, Brand New can move as slowly as they care to when it comes to releasing new music and touring the country. Whatever it takes to maintain such a steady ship, I'm for it. These guys rocked the hell out of Austin.

The setlist included material from every album, and the band seemed to revel in replaying old favorites, which somewhat surprised me. But the surprise of the night had to be "Moshi Moshi." "Are you thinking of me when you're putting on your makeup?" Classic Lacey. The performances of "Untitled 01" and "Untitled 03" are what I'll remember best. The lyrics Jesse penned for those two songs are some of my favorite he's ever strung together. Of course, the crowd went nuts for "Seventy Times 7"; it's never been my favorite BR&New jam, but hey, I always appreciate a good throwback.

Visually, the light show came alive during the heavier bits (like "Gasoline"), especially when Vin roved the stage like a restless wildman, lifting his guitar to the sky while his hair flailed. There were a handful of moments when the crowd, excitable bunch we were, pushed forward for our chance to get closer to the action. And what action. I promise you this: next time Brand New rolls into my town, I'm seeing them. I love them today, just like this goofy kid loved them yesterday:

Growing Into Men
08/13/09 at 10:39 PM by Adrian Villagomez
Brand New press is rare, but when it surfaces, it's pretty damn interesting.

I believe that years from now, when I have a moment to reflect, I'll look back and think of Brand New as the band I grew up with. Unless I hate their new album, which is still a possibility. Hah.

Brand New fun.
07/30/09 at 09:43 PM by Adrian Villagomez
Only Brand New could convince me to pre-order a bundle riddled with question marks. I bet the t-shirt will ship with some huge punctuation slapped on its face. fun.'s limited edition fan pack, on the other hand, is a much safer bet. Something tells me colorful splatter vinyl was the perfect design choice.

Drove Back Down to Texas
07/26/08 at 05:51 AM by Adrian Villagomez
I realize this Brand New song is old news to everyone, so I'm re-posting it here mostly for my own pleasure. If it's here I won't somehow forget about it and can replay it some more. The combination of electric (not acoustic) guitar, the delivery of the lyrics, the sudden screaming - I dig it.

Song Spotlight: "Logan to Government Center"
07/03/08 at 12:44 PM by Adrian Villagomez
Brand New - "Logan to Government Center"

"Logan to Government Center" is arguably (in an argument between me and myself) my favorite Brand New song, even if choosing a favorite Brand New song is comparable to choosing a favorite among the many children I'm sure to have in the future. Back when I would spin Your Favorite Weapon every day, this song stood out as something special, with music that moves from soothing and mellow, then works itself up to match Jesse's angst. The second chorus that leads into the stop-and-go breakdown is the highlight of the song, and the lyrics on lightning bolts and phenomenons are highly memorable. They're some of the best overlapping lyrics I could ask for.

Consider this a letter that I never sent
However inconsiderate it seems
Or do you still consider me
Consider me the boy you laughed with
Or you learned to live without
I suck
I know I'm late
I know you waited

You wouldn't get me on the phone
And you couldn't make me not alone

My phone bills stacked up by my bedside
With your picture, you're looking surprised
You're what makes New England so great
My island nights are all spent dying
Wait for summer to become wrought with lips
My wishful thinking

You wouldn't get me on the phone
And you couldn't make me not alone
Yeah, you wouldn't get me
You're a blue-eyed lightning bolt
You wouldn't get me
And I'm a natural phenomenon
You wouldn't get me on the phone
Nothing's absolutely definite till it's absolutely, definitely, definitely gone

I never thought this day would end
I never thought tonight could ever be this close to me
So let my hands stray past the boundaries on your back
To catch you breathin'
And get this started

You wouldn't get me
You wouldn't get me
You wouldn't get me on the phone
Yeah, you wouldn't get me
You're a blue-eyed lightning bolt
You wouldn't get me
And I'm a natural phenomenon
You couldn't make me not alone
Nothing's absolutely definite till it's gone

Iron Man

Iron Man is a good comic book movie. The special effects are solid, Downey Jr. provides some humor, and the storyline is streamlined enough for the general public to latch onto – the first big summer popcorn flick has arrived. But what Iron Man really brings to the table are possibilities. We can now expect a sequel featuring War Machine, and perhaps Stark’s downfall into alcoholism, and perhaps down the road we’ll even get that Avengers movie sure to make geeks’ heads everywhere implode. Marvel put this franchise in the good hands of Favreau and Downey Jr, and it’s paid off for them and for us... [read full review]

Brand New - Fight Off Your Demons

Fight Off Your Demons (otherwise known as "the demos") is the best release Brand New never officially released. I held off on listening to these when they first leaked, because I usually like to wait for an album's official release before listening to low quality leaks. But as it turns out, Brand New left most of these demos off The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me, and though I gave them a listen about a year ago, this is the first time I really listen to them. And they're just great. There are some tracks on The Devil and God I just don't like, but that's not the case with these demos. My favorite tracks on Fight Off Your Demons are "Untitled 01," "Untitled 03," and "Untitled 05." If you'd like to know why, read the lyrics below.

And all that I remember is the feeling of waking up
When we were kids you were the sun to which my eyes would not adjust
When we were kids I was a fountain you could never drink enough
Then came all the boys who swept you up
Played careless with your heart
And every night there was a new girl sitting beside me in my car
Something dies when you grow older
But you do the best you can
I am glad
I am glad
You found a good man

-"Untitled 01"

So we make jokes back home
And we lighten the mood
But growing up my parents saw
What sending a kid to fight can really do
But now with the war I can tell they're a little shook up
'Cause just a few mother's sons will never really be enough
Not till half of our names are etched out in the wall
And the other half ruined from the things we saw

-"Untitled 03"

We’ll keep keep keep keep you alive 'cause you’re pretty
And we need something to look at while we tear you up, take what you love
And burn it down and burn it down
You swear to build, we swear to come and burn it down

-"Untitled 05"
