| Been great to see the really positive response the new Cartel album and new Graduate tunes are getting. Restoring my faith in the pop-rock genre ... and it seems as though fans are responding in kind. | | Tags: cartel, graduate |

I put on some old Cartel tunes today. Their EP and Chroma to be exact. Man, they used to rock out. There's just nothing on their Self-Titled disc that has any of the energy from their first two releases. I wonder why? I tried to put their new one on after playing their first discs tonight -- it just drags. The production still bugs me - and the album stalls at "No Subject" and never gets back on track. I would think that this weather would have given me new perspective. This is when I love slower music ... but ... it's just not happening. I should try deleting some of the songs and see if that helps.
I keep trying to get this damn album to connect ... to relate ... to hit me. Hell, I have actually been spinning Simple Plan's new album the last few days - if I can stomach that over-the-top-pop album - I should have no problem getting into this one. Yet, I can't. There are good songs, but the bad ones just murder the flow for me. Stupid fucking bubble.
I want to see the band head into the studio with Neal Avron next year and make their opus. | | Tags: music thoughts, listening habits, cartel |

I blame my distaste for the new Cartel album almost completely on production. It sounds like shit. The hooks aren't really there -- but I could deal with that if the songs were strong. However, there are portions of songs that actually hurt my ears at a decent volume. A high-pitch whine is prevalent in a variety of songs - it's annoying as shit.
The rock songs don't rock enough - the ballads aren't sappy enough - and the lyrics blow - but the production (or mix, or engineering, or whatever you wanna call it) is what really, really fucks it up.
I don't know who is to blame for this ... it's the only time I've ever wished I had worse speakers. | | Tags: second thoughts, cartel |

I think adding the b-sides to Eisley's new album (in stores tomorrow) made me love the album even more. I was always upset that the CD felt short -- now it doesn't. Not sure why they didn't put these tracks on the album in the first place.
I love my new avatar -- Joey as Superman. Classic.
It's really bugging me that people use "you hated the bubble" excuse on the new Cartel record. If the band had released a killer album ... I would have forgotten all about the bubble. I would have gladly accepted the haters claiming I "gave in" (you know it woulda happened - someone's always going to complain) to have an album I loved. I honestly think there are 5 or 6 good songs on the CD ... the rest is an overdone and convoluted mess. This excuse to write off the haters as simply "bubble haters" - really irks me for some reason. It's almost like a cop out ... like no one will have to accept that the band was unable to put together another group of great tunes. Or that the bubble just maybe, maybe had an influence on the music itself. Whatever ... I know this argument won't go away. | | Tags: random, thoughts, avatar, eisley, cartel |

I'm going to want this as my avatar once I get bored of my current one, so I'm just saving this until then.
