Unlike my previous in-depth recommendation, I actually do see Dave's name mentioned around here from time to time, mostly by fellow Bay Area natives - and usually under the guise of Street to Nowhere, his former band. Technically, I believe STN is no more and Dave is officially a solo artist, but the project has always been Dave's anyway. They only released one album on Capitol before disbanding (Charmingly Awkward, one of my all-time favorites) and Dave has supposedly finished his second full-length on his own, but there's unfortunately been no word on a release date as of yet.
Dave is one of my favorite songwriters, hands down - think intelligent indie heavily influenced by the likes of Leonard Cohen and Bright Eyes - and his vocals have always been close to my heart as well. This certainly could be a personal thing, a "beauty in the flaws" bit - because he definitely is no Stephen Christian, for example - but he manages to convey more raw emotion in his songs than most, which makes it all worthwhile in my opinion. "Georgia, Can You Hear Me?" and "They're Not Like Us" are two of my absolute favorite songs of any genre.
I mentioned Dave's free download of "America" in a previous entry - but his personal blog is always worth a read, and his website is here should you decide to follow my rec and check him out. You won't regret it, I promise.
