Listening to 8 new demos/recordings from The Graduate. I can't believe this band is unsigned. I have no real faith in record labels (not like I had much to begin with) until someone signs them. There are some songs that are a great step up from their last album ("You Belong to Me" is a great example) ... thick of layers and they're catchy in a really "mature" (dunno how else to describe it) way. I'm impressed.
Hopefully I can post something from these sessions soon. I'll keep you in the loop.
"Don't Die Digging" has gotta be one of the best choruses I've heard this year. Yes.
Was listening to those infamous Brand New demos from a few years back last night. Part of me wonders what a straight up pop album from those guys would sound like ... Demo 2 seems very Viva Hate like, I think an album with verses/choruses like that and "Archers.." would be really good. Almost U2 like. Not that I don't like the direction they're going in ... just a thought.
In the same vein as my "first impressions" blogs - I'm going to start doing a feature on this blog called "Demoitis." It's going to be where I focus on recent demos I have heard and what my thoughts are on them. After some prompting from readers I'm going to start posting some round-ups of my first impressions (and now this feature) on the homepage when I have a few done. Figure might as well share my thoughts with the whole class, right?
I've heard three new demos the band put together for their spring recording. They sound great. Piano driven. Male/female vocals work well - very ambient. It's like Death Cab playing with Lydia on the playground. I look forward to seeing what this band can do in the future.
I dunno how many demos I have heard in total now - but every single one of them reminds me why I loved this band in the first place. The right producer and these songs are gonna really come to life. They have the pop-punk styling of their first album combined with a slightly more mature rock sound. I think this is the sound they were trying to get on their last album ... but it got convoluted. I think I've played "It's Only You" 300 times over the past few days. It's a ballad on par with "Save Us" - Will's vocals have never sounded better.
If this band doesn't grab some big tours and pick up a more substantial fanbase, it'll be a crime against music. While Brokencyde is killing music - legit bands with legit influences are struggling. This band has more talent in their little finger than Brokencyde will ever have. I really want this album to do well. Brad Wood may just be the man to bring their sound out. I sure hope so.
They're better than anything I've heard from him before. Not sure if it's really my thing. Definitely different stylistically than I was expecting - but I'll needa hear more before I decide if I think this is something I'll listen to on a consistant basis.
Jamison records things in his bedroom that sound better than some bands' studio recordings. His last album went sort of under the radar around here - but I dig what I'm hearing from these as well. I like the dude's voice - always have.
