My Mariners Theme Song
06/16/10 at 01:20 PM by Jonathan Bautts
I don't know if Johnny Cash was a baseball fan but this song perfectly encapsulates what it's like being an avid 16-year Seattle Mariners fan and again witnessing what has become their annual summer implosion.

Love is a burning thing
And it makes a fiery ring
Bound by wild desire
I fell into a ring of fire

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher

And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire
The ring of fire

The taste of love is sweet
When hearts like ours meet
I fell for you like a child
Oh, but the fire went wild

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher

And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire
The ring of fire

Twenty-Four
10/21/09 at 03:35 AM by Jonathan Bautts
Twenty-four oceans
Twenty-four skies
Twenty-four failures
In twenty-four tries
Twenty-four finds me
In twenty-fourth place
With twenty-four dropouts
At the end of the day

Life is not what I thought it was
Twenty-four hours ago
Still I'm singing “Spirit,
Take me up in arms with You”
And I'm not who I thought I was
Twenty-four hours ago
Still I'm singing “Spirit,
Take me up in arms with You”

There's twenty-four reasons
To admit that I'm wrong
With all my excuses
Still twenty-four strong
See, I'm not copping out
Not copping out
Not copping out
When You're raising the dead in me

Oh, oh, I am the second man
Oh, oh, I am the second man now
Oh, I am the second man now
And You're raising these

Twenty-four voices
With twenty-four hearts
All of my symphonies
In twenty-four parts
But I want to be one today
Centered and true
I'm singing “Spirit,
Take me up in arms with You”
You're raising the dead in me

Oh, oh, I am the second man
Oh, oh, I am the second man now
Oh, I am the second man now
And You're raising the dead in me, yeah

I wanna see miracles
To see the world change
Wrestled the angel
For more than a name
For more than a feeling
For more than a cause
I'm singing “Spirit,
Take me up in arms with You”
And You're raising the dead in me

Twenty-four oceans
With twenty-four hearts
All of my symphonies
With twenty-four parts
Life is not what I thought it was
Twenty-four hours ago
Still I'm singing “Spirit
Take me up in arms with You”

I'm not copping out
Not copping out

Easy Target
02/14/09 at 03:40 PM by Jonathan Bautts
All her signals are getting lost in the ether (that's what she wanted)
She's a landslide with a city beneath her (that's what she wanted)
So take a good look, so you'll never forget it (that's what she wanted)
Take a deep breath, I know I'm gonna regret it (that's what she wanted)

Holly's looking dry looking for an easy target
Let her slit my throat, give her ammo if she'll use it
Caution on the road lies, lies and hidden danger
Southern California's breeding mommy's little monster

She's got a mission and I'm collateral damage (that's what she wanted)
She's the flower that you place on my casket (that's what she wanted)
Savor the moment cause the memory's fleeting
Take a photograph as the last train is leaving

Holly's looking dry looking for an easy target
Let her slit my throat, give her ammo if she'll use it
Caution on the road lies, lies and hidden danger
Southern California's breeding mommy's little monster

Better run, run, run, run, run (Holly let me out)

If You Were Born Today (Song For Little Baby Jesus)
12/26/08 at 06:09 PM by Jonathan Bautts
If you were born today
We'd kill you by age eight
Never get the chance to say

Joy to the world
And peace on the earth
Forgive them for they know not what they do

Blessed are the meek
And blessed are the humble
Blessed are the ninety and nine

Deny the flesh
Deny all that's evil
Tonight you'll deny me thrice

If you were born today
We'd kill you by age eight
You'd never have a chance to say

23
10/21/08 at 09:48 PM by Jonathan Bautts
Since my 23rd birthday is today, here's the lyrics to one of my favorite songs of all time. As usual, the amazing Jim Adkins knows how to pretty much sum up my life.

I felt for sure last night
That once we said goodbye
No one else will know these lonely dreams
No one else will know that part of me
I'm still driving away
And I'm sorry every day
I won't always love these selfish things
I won't always live not stopping

It was my turn to decide
I knew this was our time
No one else will have me like you do
No one else will have me, only you

You'll sit alone forever
If you wait for the right time
What are you hoping for?
I'm here and now I'm ready
Holding on tight
Don't give away the end
The one thing that stays mine

Amazing still it seems
I'll be 23
I won't always love what I'll never have
I won't always live in my regrets

You'll sit alone forever
If you wait for the right time
What are you hoping for?
I'm here and now I'm ready
Holding on tight
Don't give away the end
The one thing that stays mine

Burn Out Brighter (Northern Lights)
10/18/08 at 11:02 PM by Jonathan Bautts
So late last night I was able to interview Anberlin vocalist Stephen Christian a second time. Despite battling laryngitis, he put on a dynamite show and was nice enough to still do the interview, further proving why he's one of my favorite people ever and an incredible human being. In honor of their album New Surrender being one of the best of 2008 and Stephen's general awesomeness, here's the lyrics to one of my favorite songs from it, which is a great one to live life by.

Live, I want to live inspired
Die, I want to die for something

Racing towards the heavens
I fell into a pitch black
I'm moments from landing and I'm
Shaking like a heart attack

Is there time?
Can I turn back?
I made mistakes in the past
Need a chance
Can't say goodbye
Wish I could set things right tonight

Live, I want to live inspired
Die, I want to die for something
Higher than myself
Live and die for anyone else
The more I live I see
This life's not about me

All I know spins out of control
Wonder what's next for a hardened soul
Nothing I earned can save me now
Here in what may be my final hour

Is there time?
Can I turn back?
I made mistakes, well, in the past
Need a chance
Can't say goodbye
Wish I could set things right tonight

Live, I want to live inspired
Die, I want to die for something
Higher than myself
Live and die for anyone else
The more I live I see
This life's not about me

Don't want to leave this world
Knowing I breathed in vain
Looked out for myself
So sorry, so ashamed

Don't want to leave this life
Knowing I barely tried
To chase down all my dreams
That I hid away on the inside

Live, I want to live on fire
Die, I want to burn out brighter
Brighter than the northern lights
Want to live to feel the daylight
The more I give I see
This life's not about me

Swim
08/17/08 at 10:05 PM by Jonathan Bautts
You gotta swim
Swim for your life
Swim for the music
That saves you
When you're not so sure you'll survive

You gotta swim
And swim when it hurts
The whole world is watching
You haven't come this far
To fall off the earth

The currents will pull you
Away from your love
Just keep your head above

I found a tidal wave
Begging to tear down the dawn
Memories like bullets
They fire at me from a gun
Cracking the armor, yeah

I swim for brighter days
Despite the absence of sun
Choking on salt water
I'm not giving in
I swim

You gotta swim
Through nights that won't end
Swim for your families
Your lovers, your sisters
And brothers and friends

Yeah, you gotta swim
Through wars without cause
Swim for the lost politicians
Who don't see their greed as a flaw

The currents will pull us
Away from our love
Just keep your head above

I found a tidal wave
Begging to tear down the dawn
Memories like bullets
They fire at me from a gun
Cracking the armor, yeah

I swim for brighter days
Despite the absence of sun
Choking on salt water
I'm not giving in
I swim

You gotta swim
Swim in the dark
There's an ocean to drift in
Feel the tide shifting
And wait for the spark

Yeah, you gotta swim
Don't let yourself sink
Just follow the horizon
I promise you
It's not as far as you think

And the currents will drag us
Away from our love
Just keep your head above
Swim

Viva La Vida
05/08/08 at 09:26 PM by Jonathan Bautts
I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy’s eyes
Listened as the crowd would sing,
"Now the old king is dead, long live the king"
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you'd gone there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world

It was a wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn’t believe what I’d become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can’t explain
I know Saint Peter won’t call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

I Believe
03/22/08 at 08:56 PM by Jonathan Bautts
To go along with Easter, here's a fitting song from one of the greatest lyricists of our time.

Seeing Your face in every child that smiles
But I can’t help but rejoice
I have heard what some call thunder
But I knew it was Your voice

Touched the holes in Your calloused hands
Stuck my fingers in Your side
Oh I was six feet deep in doubt but
Now I’m sure that You’re alive

And it’s safe to say
We’ll never know everything
Still blessings we receive
And it’s safe to say
I really don’t know a thing
Still I choose to believe

Smelled the scent of angels sweet
Floating in the summer air
I have breathed in deep the incense
While the saints send up their prayers

I have tasted and now I see
Oh I see that You are good
I have ate Your perfect body
I have drank Your blessed blood

And it’s safe to say
We’ll never know everything
Still blessings we receive
And it’s safe to say
I really don’t know a thing
Still I choose to believe

And all the answers that I find
Only take me so far down the line
The tracks always give out
Yeah it’s a leap from the lion’s mouth

And it’s safe to say
I really don’t know a thing
Still blessings we receive
Yeah it’s safe to say
I really don’t know a thing
Still I choose to believe

Falling Slowly
02/27/08 at 04:16 PM by Jonathan Bautts
Even though the musical genre is by far my least favorite, last summer I was taken in by a little film called Once, which was the most “natural” musical I had ever seen and a far cry from the overblown productions of Broadway. Then at the Academy Awards on Sunday, one of the highlights was when Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová performed and then won the Oscar for their song “Falling Slowly,” making it my favorite song to win an Oscar. Irglová’s speech, which was made possible after host Jon Stewart brought her back on stage after she had gotten cut off by the orchestra, was the most touching moment of the night. If you haven’t seen the film or checked out the soundtrack, The Frames, or The Swell Season, you’re missing out on some really great music.

Falling Slowly

I don’t know you, but I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me, and always fool me
And I can’t react
Games that never amount
To more than they’re meant
Will play themselves out

Take this sinking boat
And point it home
We’ve still got time
Raise your hopeful voice
You have a choice
You’ve made it now

Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can’t go back
Moods that take me, and erase me
And I’m painted black
You have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It’s time that you won

Take this sinking boat
And point it home
We’ve still got time
Raise your hopeful voice
You have a choice
You’ve made it now

Falling slowly
Sing your melody
I’ll sing it loud
