So for those of you who don't know, I live and breathe politics. I love it even though it can be a gigantic pain in the ass more times than not. When i'm bored I randomly decide to research the presidential candidates of both parties because I like to be well informed. Today was Mike Huckabee day considering he tripled his polling numbers in Iowa. So I figure I'll see what he's all about, having heard snippets of his spiel through work things, just because it's good to know the 'enemy.'
Holy shit. I kid you not this man is frightening. Here are direct quotes from his website:
"What's the point of keeping the terrorists at bay in the Middle East if we can't keep decline and decadence at bay here at home? The growing number of children born out of wedlock and the rise in no-fault divorce have been a disaster for our society. They have pushed many women and children into poverty and onto the welfare, food stamp, and Medicaid rolls. These children are more likely to drop out of school and end up in low-paying, dead-end jobs, they are more likely to get involved with drugs and crime, they are more likely to have children out of wedlock or get divorced themselves someday, continuing the unhappy cycle."
Beyond the lunacy, I'd like to point out that there are also factual problems with this statement. I take personal offense to this bullshit that conservatives propagate as truth, because my mom was single when she had me. by no means was it easy for her or i, but i certainly didn't come out so fucked up that the government should be more concerned with me than with terrorists. And as for the whole "expense" argument. Maybe if women didn't make 72 cents to every 1 dollar men made, we'd be less likely to be on government programs. and ps fucker its not called welfare anymore. welcome to 1996.
"My faith is my life - it defines me. My faith doesn't influence my decisions, it drives them..."
"The First Amendment requires that expressions of faith be neither prohibited nor preferred."
Really that's great for you. I'm sure millions of people feel this way, but why should the people of this country have to abide by what drives ONE man. This scares the shit out of me for so many reasons. And his argument about how the 1st amendment is literally true, but don't you think having the President of the United States make a decision based on his personal faith gives preferential treatment? Under that argument shouldn't he be consulting with Jews, Muslims, atheists, etc? I mean hell Christianity can't even all agree on one thing, so really we all have to endure the results of your decisions based on one small segment of what this country believes. Goodbye Bill of Rights
"The FairTax is also progressive, but it doesn't punish the American dream of success, or the old-fashioned virtues of hard work and thrift, it rewards and encourages them. The FairTax isn't intended to raise any more or less money for the federal government to spend - it is revenue neutral."
I'm sorry but I love candidates who think they're going to wipe out the IRS. Really even if it were a good idea, its such a cluster fuck that you'd NEVER be able to do it. Let alone get Congress to approve it. Can you imagine the uprising of people who wouldn't get their Social Security after all this time? How exactly are you going to lead this country with no money? It's just so impractical it makes me laugh. Don't get me wrong I think our tax system is fucked, but really i mean come on let's all wake up from our nap. and clearly huckabee hasn't met anyone from the irs because those people will tear him to shreds over this. i really wouldn't screw with them.
so much more but seeing as i'm sure no one cares, I'll be done for now. Let the insanity of the conservative "moral majority" continue. i should start working on my dual citizenship applications...
