Before I discovered the internet, I used to discover new music via compilations. This compilation is one of the best compilation I ever brought. Some of the bands have gone on to be some of my favorite bands including The Get Up Kids and Hot Rod Circuit.
I don't even know why I brought it. I think I heard or read about Hot Rod Circuit somewhere else and I wanted to hear more of Saves The Day and Dashboard. I also think it had one or two Alkaline Trio songs I hadn't heard yet.
However it is strange that I remember buying it from a shop in Nottingham for about £7. Weird
A few months ago when I started out planning my gig promoting company. Some bloke from another company in the same town as me got my MSN address and began to annoy me. Constantly asked me to help him out and stuff but I didn't want to for various reasons; I had no money, he wanted to put shit bands (stuff like heavy metal bands eg stuff I don't like) and he seemed untrustworthy (which I later found out he was from a friend) and I found it hard to believe a word he said.
After I decided to not bother with gig promoting company, this guy comes to saying he "knows some people" who can help me with my attempt to become a music journalist. He knew I write for some websites (alterthepress.com and forthesound.com).
He told me to write a album review and e-mail to him with my contact details, which I didn't want to or give, as I don't trust this person. The review I sent him was my review of You Me At Six's "Take Off Your Colours".
This all happened last night, now today he tells me he's "had a reply" and saying that the review wasn't "commercial enough". So a band who have been on the cover of Kerrang! magazine, had plenty of press coverage, are popular on myspace, a UK tour which has more or less sold out, supported Fall Out Boy and debut album entered no 25 in the UK album chart isn't good enough?
I then find out he wants me to write a review of fucking Miley Cyrus! Someone I know little about. I'm 22. I don't take much interest in whats on the radio or are on MTV (or in this case the Disney Channel).
I don't want to sound ignorant or anything but if I'm going to review music. I want it to be real, not some manufactured shite.
All in all I don't think this person had any contacts and he seemed like a grade A bullshiter.
(ok not really a rant but I hope you get the point)
