Charlotte Richardson Andrews, writing for The Guardian:
For all the films and programmes about women's role in punk, their recognition has been a problem since the 1970s and it looks like very little has changed. Women were a part of punk from the beginning as musicians, promoters, venue heads, artists, provocateurs, community organisers, documenting their local scenes in zines, films, books and photographs. As LA punk veteran Alice Bag has pointed out, punk started out as an inclusive and diverse movement, but was quickly annexed by white dudes. Women have had to fight for space and recognition in punk ever since.

With tomorrow being the official celebration of America's independence, we thought it was fitting to get a discussion started about songs centered around freedom, America, and independence. Whether that means a song about driving down America's highways, or a song honoring our armed forces, there's certainly music to fit the mood of the 4th. Leave us your favorites in the replies!

Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park has responded to the recent video interview from Chvrches, where apparently the interviewer misquoted "dig" as "dick" -- the whole thing is pretty overblown at this point if you ask me.
Lazy journalists will simplify words and start conflicts they donít have to fight in. Cowardly bloggers will take sides based on what other blogs think is cool. In contrast, THE HUNTING PARTY is a statement about who we are and what inspires us right now. Itís a stab out into an unknown. Our fight is with conformity, stagnation, inspiration, and even our own bandís complex history. And a big thank you goes out to CHVRCHES and all the bands whose names Iíve mentioned, for...

Sumerian Records' CEO, Ash Avildsen, has responded to the post made earlier from Upon a Burning Body.
I woke up to a ton of missed calls and just saw all this stuff about Danny Leal of UABB posing as that he's been abducted or kidnapped. My phone hasn't stopped ringing since. As a child, we all learn the story "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" and it sticks within our consciousness for a reason. I do not condone this type of publicity stunt. This was done behind my back and I am not OK with it. In my eyes, there's never a time to use the possibility of real-life abduction, injury or murder of someone you care about to promote anything, especially an album. If you need to resort to that, then you...

For the last few years, The Quesadilla Factory was home to many fantastic pop-punk and hardcore shows. However, the time has come for the venue to closedown, but that doesn't mean that they're not going to go out without a bang. The Story So Far, Downpresser, and more will be playing the venue's final show. Only 200 pre-sale tickets will be available on July 4th. More information can be found on the venue's Facebook page.

Geoff Rickly recently sat down with Pitchfork to talk about punk, music, and United Nations.
What we get in punk these days is the ďanti-antiĒ: Someone comes up with something, then the next generation is against that, and then the next generation is against that, and then that thing becomes a problem. There's these layers of anti-, and so many of them are just so self-serving. It's not about larger freedom. Laura Jane Grace and Against Me! are one of the only punk rock things I've seen in years. And that's what [The Next Four Years] is about, starting with "Serious Business" as a joke about careerism and privilege and how blind we all are. All these songs are set up as jokes, and the...
