All sorts of numbers for all of us chart geeks today. Bruno Mars has climbed to the top of the charts this week, moving 95,000 copies of his latest album (bringing his total about 40k short of going platinum). Atoms for Peace come in at number two selling 50k copies of Amok. Mumford and Sons round out the top three with another 43,000 copies of Babel, which has now passed the 2 million mark. I pushed back the album sales round-up a few days so I could see if I could get some more sales numbers to include (didn't get much, sorry). Mumford & Sons' Babel remains at the top spot with 63,000 copies sold. Bruno Mars' Unorthodox Jukebox hits number two with 48,000 and Josh Groban was just behind at number three (41,000). Overall album sales totaled 5.46 million units, down 20% compared with the sum last week and down 13% compared with the comparable sales week of 2012. Year to date album sales stand at 44.58 million, down 7% compared to the same total at this point last year.
According to the annual report from the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry), total music sales revenues in 2012 increased by 0.3% from 2011. This marks the first time that record sales have increased since 1999. Revenue from digital sales increased by 9% from 2011, and revenue from streaming services increased by a whopping 44%. The report also tells us that the best-selling song worldwide last year was "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen (12.5 million units sold), and that for the second consecutive year Adele had the best-selling album, moving 8.3 million copies of 21 in 2012.

Both of Bon Iver's albums, For Emma, Forever Ago and Bon Iver, Bon Iver have gone gold. What's interesting is that the albums, released two and a half years apart, crossed the 500,000 mark at basically the same time.
Jack White's Blunderbuss is the biggest selling vinyl album of 2012 according to Nielsen Soundscan's vinyl charts with over 33,000 copies sold. Knocking The Beatles' Abbey Road off the top spot (a position it had held the previous three years), Blunderbuss sales are the highest for a new album (not a catalog album) since Soundscan began specifically tracking vinyl in 2008.
