GameStop has swooped in to buy Geeknet (the company that owns ThinkGeek) on the heels of the company finalizing a deal with Hot Topic.
Geeknet terminated a previous agreement to be bought by Hot Topic Inc., and GameStop will reimburse Geeknet for the breakup free associated with that deal, the companies said Tuesday in a statement. The Hot Topic bid had a $122 million equity value. The acquisition combines GameStop’s 6,600 stores with a retailer that sold $140.7 million of geek-chic merchandise last year, mostly through its ThinkGeek website. Online geek-y retailer ThinkGeek and its parent company Geeknet Inc. are in the process of being acquired by Hot Topic, a popular mall-based retailer best known for selling vampire T-shirts and other faux-goth-pop accoutrements. According to a press release issued this morning, Hot Topic will be picking up all of Geeknet’s outstanding shares of common stock for $17.50 per share, and the company will also be fronting about $37 million in cash. The total value of the transaction will be $122 million.
