The Quietus has a great piece up about the negative effects that the 2014 Record Store Day has been having on the industry it's designed to help. The essay is filled with comments and quotes from small labels about the effects RSD has had on their schedules, releases, and a number of other problems. Who's to blame? In the minds of some, it's the major labels elbowing their way onto the scene and saying "What can we shit into the form of a record and shove into the hands of the wanton masses?" If you're planning on hitting the shops this year, does this change any of your purchasing plans?

Beyoncé's new self-titled record sold more than 430k in its first day of release and is projected to sell more than 600k (all digital, of course) and debut at #1 on the Billboard. For comparison, her first day numbers outsold Katy Perry’s Prism (286k in its first week), Lady Gaga’s ARTPOP (258k), Miley Cyrus' Bangerz (270k), and Kanye West's Yeezus (327k), while her total first week will outsell her husband's (Jay Z) first week output with Magna Carta Holy Grail (528k). Basically, holy crap. It'll be interesting to see what her Friday-Thursday total is - I wonder if Beyoncé could have been the...

The RIAA has changed it's rules regarding digital sales and platinum eligibility, meaning that once Jay-Z's Magna Carta Holy Grail is released to Samsung Galaxy users, it will essentially have gone platinum.
Going forward, sales of albums in digital format will become eligible on the release date, while sales of albums in physical format will still become eligible for certification 30 days after the release date.

Not only do we believe it’s sensible and logical to align digital album rules with those we have maintained for digital singles since the program’s inception, we also consider today’s move in line with our larger efforts to modernize the G&P Program to reflect the new music...
