Mongoloids, The - Assorted Music
The Mongoloids - Assorted Music
Release Date: January 6th, 2008
Record Label: Eulogy Records

The Mongoloids are a straight edge hardcore outfit from New Jersey. They bring the typical Jersey hardcore sound with a twist to the scene. Assorted Music is the follow up to their debut release Time Trials which was a concept album about reality. These aren’t your normal group of hardcore guys. They are known for their abstract and detailed artwork within their booklets done by Matt Draghi. They are sure to take the hardcore scene by storm -- Its only a matter of time.

How is it?

I guess when it comes down to bands, I judge directly off the vocals. But there are a few exceptions, those being Between the Buried and Me and La Dispute. Well I have found another band to add to the list: The Mongoloids. At first, the deep vocals are very polarizing and most will find unpleasing to the ears. But the more you listen to Assorted Music, you realize how musically deep it is. With an intro that sounds like its been pulled from a cartoon and an instrumental interlude, the band sets the stage for their thrashing music perfectly. I will be the first to admit that I’m not totally into the hardcore scene -- I like a few bands here and there but its not my gig. Assorted Music gives you a nice taste of something different with excellent musicianship. Even though the EP only tracks in at about 17 minutes, it's long enough to know what the Mongoloids are all about. They don’t sing to please people. Its to get the point of their music across. They back up the bold vocals with some ripping guitar work and thrashing drums. At times it reminds me of old school Metallica tearing through one of their classics. Listen to “Witdrawn (revisited)” if you want to see what I’m talking about. Once you get past the vocals and accept them for what they are, the music is great. The Mongoloids aren’t for everyone, and they know that. You will either hate them or love them, and they seem to be okay with that.

It was tough at first but I got use to it.

Nope, I meant Cold War, although it could have been Cold World as well.

I dig what they do, and love to see some hardcore edge bands still on the scene, but like many I couldn't get past the vocals.

I was expecting something really weird for the vocals (like Devourment's super deep cricket vocals), but he sounds very similar to Barney from Napalm Death, so it's cool.
