American Idiot Film Coming Soon

Universal is in negotiations to pick up the screen rights for American Idiot, with Michael Mayer to direct and Oscar-winner Dustin Lance Black to write.

DCART 04/13/11 12:28 AM

sweet, ill probably check it out

JoeHalby 04/13/11 01:07 AM

When will it stop?

PerfectChaos337 04/13/11 01:07 AM

Oh, come on. Wasn't the play enough? I mean, I like the album and band just as much as the next guy, but wasn't the massive success of the album and Broadway musical enough to get the point across? I guess it's all about making money though, which is a bummer.

dumpweed41 04/13/11 01:08 AM

Thought this was that AI documentary on first glance. Wanted to see that for ages.

Could be good, could be awful. Wait and see.

LetterBomb31 04/13/11 01:12 AM

I don't know how I feel about this. Is it really necessary to make a film?

Thomas Nassiff 04/13/11 01:15 AM

Will most likely watch multiple times, screw tha h@terz.

Thomas Nassiff 04/13/11 01:16 AM

UH Tom Hanks is a producer, this can't end up being all that shitty can it?

isn't Tom Hanks an actor? sure this could be shitty lol. devils advocate.

for some reason, when I try to picture an American Idiot movie, I think of that movie Suburbia with Giovanni Ribisi... just like setting-wise haha.

To be fair, they were talking about doing an AI movie before the play even happened.

Plus this way I might actually be able to see the stupid fucking thing.

craigboliver 04/13/11 01:41 AM

this is getting out of hand with all of the American Idiot stuff.

t3hmilkman923 04/13/11 03:27 AM

i agree, a little overboard with american idiot, but im deffinetly going to check it out anyway

dru 04/13/11 03:55 AM

This. Except I don't like Green Day, haha.

OnaedInSpace 04/13/11 04:42 AM

but they were just about to go back to being a normal band? cigarettes and valentines :(

fna4 04/13/11 05:14 AM

This doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be a film, a lot of screen rights are bought with no film ever coming to fruition as a result.

prefix-core 04/13/11 05:35 AM

There's been talks of this for quite a while. I was iffy about the musical, but after seeing it? It was pretty fuckin' great. I'm curious to see how (or if) this turns out.

deFobbed14yrs 04/13/11 05:41 AM

damn.

introduction 04/13/11 06:24 AM

I can't believe that album is still being overrated like this, it's absolutely ridiculous.

Simulcast 04/13/11 06:26 AM

TSTLSOOM 04/13/11 06:33 AM

it felt too cheesy lol

SteveLikesMusic 04/13/11 07:30 AM

Cool.

xrider105 04/13/11 07:46 AM

They have brought milking-an-album-for-all-it's-worth to a new level.

brook183 04/13/11 08:34 AM

Idiot America will eat this up.

blowmybutthole 04/13/11 08:55 AM

fuck that, give me a dookie movie.

but kinda forserious, i think The Early November's "Mother, Mechanic, and Path" would be a very, very good indie movie if done right.

QFT

chelsealouanne 04/13/11 09:46 AM

Why not? I mean it's already on broadway. Would be kinda cool!

jwicklun 04/13/11 10:14 AM

Eh, if it looks good, I'll check it out.

pteargriffin 04/13/11 10:18 AM

tom hanks playtone producing this makes me think of that thing you do, so i'm pumped hahah

dbowen 04/13/11 10:24 AM

The dude from 'N Sync is writing it? Awesome.

*crying stars* 04/13/11 10:34 AM

It won't work well as a live action film, the entire energy/atmosphere is based on the limitations of the stage imo (as someone who's seen it on Broadway.)

Sean.Murphy 04/13/11 10:56 AM

This would be cool if it was still 2005.

The play is also devastatingly embarrassing to watch. Awful high school level acting.

Oh well. Some people need money right?

ThisDayForward 04/13/11 10:57 AM

Get over yourself. I mean let's be real. was American Idiot a landmark album....NO. Has it all become just a gimmick..YES.

iambubbaq 04/13/11 11:07 AM

Nice haven't' got the chance to see it live. I'd be down for a film version. As long as it doesn't suck

ParkwayTom 04/13/11 11:16 AM

Oh lawdy.

Tom Hanks directed parts of Band of Brothers and The Pacific.... i believe he also was producer for both of those. Both of which are awesome.

True, but he also produced My Big Fat Greek Wedding, The Polar Express, and Evan Almighty, so there's no guarantee that his involvement will be a positive influence.

Ryan Gardner 04/13/11 11:43 AM

Very cool. One of my favorite records of the past ten years

RonStoppable 04/13/11 12:12 PM

I'm a huge fan of Dustin Lance Black, though I was thrown off a little to see him involved.

hongfong00 04/13/11 12:23 PM

hello!..this album sucked!

Gumbyjag 04/13/11 01:32 PM

they shouldn't make it a musical movie, just a normal one.

crogers1983 04/13/11 02:10 PM

Martin Scorsese should direct this and get Di Niro in as the main character!

...well i can at least dream about it.

crogers1983 04/13/11 02:12 PM

fuck, Martin Scorsese could direct a My Little Pony movie and I'd see it.

styg4me 04/13/11 02:31 PM

I'm glad they still can make music for kids in high school to enjoy. Nothing about this band is talented, interesting, or even catchy. They will never and have never expanded their sound. It is all the same four chord crap that I was playing at the age of 8 when I first started playing. To come out with a broadway show was just a little extreme. Now, they want to make a movie to add some more $$$ to their bank accounts. Believe it or not, there is actually real music out there. They just need to be heard by the masses.

s2h72 04/13/11 02:51 PM

haha i wonder which movie will be better american idiot by green day or love by angels and airwaves

harley7733 04/13/11 03:01 PM

Hey The Who did it, and in some cases if you really link of it, they're kinda the modern equivocation if you follow they're careers, if we're all being honest here.

Now THERE'S some competition for worst movie of the year. I'd say love will be worse only because American idiot has somewhat of a decent story.

Anything tom delonge has touched in the last 6 years has been shit.

Bring back Boxcar Racer!

ChrisCanberg 04/13/11 09:07 PM

Never seen a piece of media stretch across so many different outputs. If anything, good for Green Day. American Idiot was great and deserves all the success it gets.
