Remembering MLK Jr.

One of my favorite quotes: "History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people." - Martin Luther King Jr.

ScorchOurBodies 01/16/12 08:33 AM

If you haven't seen the episode of The Boondocks where MLK JR is still alive and sees how the African-American culture is today, you totally should.

"We have guided missiles and misguided men" - MLK

Miketheunicycle 01/16/12 08:45 AM

i just don't like seeing obama's picture attached to this

Holly HoX! 01/16/12 08:49 AM

Legends never die. RIP MLK.

birdman 01/16/12 08:51 AM

Yeah, why the picture of Obama?

Why not? I think its rather fitting. MLK's work is a big part of why he has the ability to hold the highest governmental office.

I guess so. And besides, Obama's photo is just the default for political news feeds, if I'm not mistaken

yeah it is the default

Jason Tate 01/16/12 08:58 AM

Because every "political" post uses the same tag icon. And it's been the current US president for at least 13 years now.

Fair enough, I just wouldn't have thought that this was necessarily political.

Whalejaw 01/16/12 09:01 AM

I can't believe this jerk is stealing the spotlight off my birthday.

Manufactured Dreams 01/16/12 09:04 AM

Happy MLK Day!

I'm gonna celebrate by not being oppressed.

ramomcferno 01/16/12 09:08 AM

RIP Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

CTRL+ALT+DANCE 01/16/12 09:08 AM

As being an African American, MLK made it easier for me growing up and being accepted. I thank him for using civil disobedience and just his words to get his points across to the masses. Plus making it more acceptable for me to walk hand in hand with my boyfriend who is of another race.
He paved the way for tolerance.
Thanks Martin.

Nowisnotthetime 01/16/12 09:09 AM

This quote goes a long way in explaining why I can't vote for any politician Democrat or Republican that is against gay marriage. Our Grandchildren will be disgusted with us that we would choose the lesser of two evils in that case, just like we're appallled at Grandparents now that would've voted from people like Strom Thurmond.

You've been posting news for 13 years here?

We shouldn't disrespect MLK with a Obama avatar.

I started a version of APnet when I was around 15. I'm 28 now. And we definitely had ~8 years of Bush being the icon, and at least ~4 of Obama.

I don't think it's disrespectful at all. I doubt many rational human beings actually do.

blink_my_robot 01/16/12 10:51 AM

Growing up black/white/Spanish in a small town that was 99.9% white...it was rough at times because all I wanted to do was fit in with everyone else and have blue eyes and blonde hair.

Then in 3rd grade we were introduced to MLK Jr. in class and I made my mom go out and buy me his biography (kiddie version of course), all those aforementioned wants were forgotten.

Now I wear my hair with its natural curl and can't imagine not being the "black" girl at the shows I go to, even though I am really happy to see more and more a variety in the color palette at Warped nowadays than when I first started going to shows.

As disrespectful as that is, I personally would have been stoked. That sounds delicious.

Wow, I had no idea this site was that old. Wiki tells me AP started in 2000, that's crazy.

I think that's when I actually bought the dot net domain name and made it about a lot of different bands and not just 4 or 5.

absolutepunk.8m.com I think was one of the original places, and then absolutepunk.dhs.org or something ...
