Pitchfork is crap. That being said so is the the prevailing mentality on this site that the more accessible or hook driven a band is the better they are. Also calling band on a major label who did a record with a mainstream pop producer "indie" shows how dumb using the term indie as a genre is.

Errr really?? The whole mentality amongst rock, punk and indie websites seem to be the complete opposite - any form of pop is bad. That is why there are so few guitar-based bands who have actually managed to break - because any band that does seem to have catchy choruses and 'all-encompassing' lyrics gets shunned because they either copied someone from the 60s, 70s or 80s (So fucking what it was 20 odd years ago!!) or because they are on the radio and therefore don't have 'any real meaning'. Just take a look at Pitchfork, NME or Drowned In Sound or even the Mercury Award nominations today. AbsolutePunk is nowhere near as bad as those sites - it champions rock that is good pop - but when it comes to rock and indie it seems to be the same across the board: 'alternative rock is good, clever, real, meaningful, deep; classic/pop/mainstream rock is bad, stale, childish and shallow'


The term 'indie' has changed it's meaning. It no longer has the same meaning now than it did in the 80s. Kaiser Chiefs and The Cribs are 'indie rock' bands no matter what label they are on. Same with the words 'emo' and even 'post-hardcore' - they have taken on a new broader meaning. Just like many words have changed there meaning over the decades and even centuries.

So this debuted with more sold than "Some Nights" did?... Geez. How?

I gave the album a listen, and it's alright, but I didn't think it was anything spectacular.

The only song I have heard from these guys is It's Time and that song is very grating / annoying to me. Not a fan of the lyrics or the instrumentation in several parts of the song. Comes off as someone trying to write something catchy but it really isn't very catchy to me.

Holy Shit. Good for them, guess signing to Interscope was a good choice. New album is pretty damn good as well, it appears as if the label gave them a lot of freedom which is good.

Definitely not spectacular, but its definitely a good album. I think their next one will be stronger, mostly because it will be written as a cohesive whole rather than taking some EP songs and writing some new ones

Good way of putting it. Trying to write something poppy which additionally automatically seems to mean the lyrics have to be bland, pointless, and interchangeable.

The album is great. Bought it on a whim. I love the tracks that were from old EPs so I did not mind the, being on their cause for a major label debut they put up their best work. Radioactive is great as ever but I loved new songs too. Bleeding Out is such fucking jam.

To be honest Its Time is not even close to my favorite song on the album. I really just sorta got into this band with this album so it may be a bad reference but I think Radioactive, Top of The World, Bleeding Out, and Nothing Left To Say are the best songs. Each one are very different too.

Personally, I didn't enjoy the album. This may prompt me to give it a second listen, but I don't think it's amazing by any means.

Well I feel dumb. Never heard of this band until now. I'm usually pretty good with whats on billboard and things like that. Good for them though. That's a big number.

Listen to another song other than the single. Not sure why Its Time was the song that got so much play. Its one of the weakest on the album.

most every band's first album is 1/2 full of old songs from EPs. that's just how it works.

Why do people bother posting just to say they've never heard of the band? Isn't that the whole point of the link and music sites in general...you know, to find new music?

Congrats to them! The newer songs on the album haven't really hit me yet, but the songs from their previous EPs are still awesome. Extremely talented band with a lot of diversity in their sound.

Damn. That's huge! I know I've got my copy! I wish Two Door Cinema Club got a little more attention for their solid album, but solid debut around 18k for them.

your not wrong. It is very common, but at the same time it still doesn't stop from detracting from the album as a whole. Unless your WCAR or something, all their stuff pretty much sounds the same so the EP material that made it onto their debut slotted right in there

They sold more that Melissa Etheridge and Animal Collective, that's something?

i can't say they are awful cause they aren't. But they are a complete ripoff of the Killers.
