Fight the World - Contrast

Fight the WorldContrast
Record Label: Unsigned
Release Date: July 20th, 2012

As a huge pop-punk fan, I’m open to listen to any pop-punk band, really. When I first heard about Texas pop-punk/hardcore band Fight the World, I was quite interested by their RIYL, which featured bands like Such Gold, Title Fight, and Lifetime. Those bands are great, and that’s essentially what you get with the five-piece’s new EP Contrast. Clocking in at about 10 minutes, it’s such a short EP, but for what it’s worth, it does pack quite a punch in that length of time. This band isn’t the best I’ve ever heard, but they are very interesting, and enjoyable, nonetheless.

The EP starts out with “Lake Livingston,” and it immediately begins with some harsh vocals that do not sound like they belong on a pop-punk record, but rather a melodic hardcore band. The vocals are a bit heavier with this band than with bands like Such Gold, and Title Fight, but still enjoyable. Clean vocals appear a bit later, and they’re not that great, to be honest. They’re just rather generic clean vocals, but still enjoyable. The instrumentation is quite generic, too, but still enjoyable. In fact, that’s how I describe this whole EP – it’s generic, but it’s not awful at all. It’s a quite burst of pop-punk/hardcore that any fan should really enjoy. Second track, “Soviet Spies,” is a 54-second burst of hardcore energy, and it certainly showcases the heavier side of the band. Unlike Such Gold, this band does focus more on the “hardcore” side to their sound, which is a bit different, and it’s quite enjoyable. Usually, tracks like this do not work, but surprisingly, “Soviet Spies” does work, despite the very odd name. Ironically, in stark contrast (pun intended), “Man Maker” is completely the opposite, and has a more pop-punk sound. If anything, this is the track that does focus on their pop-punk side. There are some harsh vocals in the bridge, but they don’t seem too out of place here. EP closer “Invital” is a two-minute pop-punk track that doesn’t really do much for me, honestly.

Overall, this is a rather generic EP; this band is pretty cool, and has potential, but this isn’t the best EP I’ve ever heard, considering it’s only 10 minutes. Considering this is also a young band, I’m sure we’ll be hearing from these guys a lot more in the future.

Recommended If You LikeTitle Fight, Such Gold, Lifetime, pop-punk mixed with hardcore.
