Blink 182 have talked with MTV about being free agents.

"Yes indeed, we are no longer with Interscope. It's been a long, amazing journey with them, starting with Cargo records, then MCA, then Geffen, and finally Interscope, but the time has come to move on," he wrote. "The reasons for us not working together are many and varied, but mostly we wish them luck in everything in their future, and thank those there who've worked so hard on Blink-182 throughout the years."

This is clearly something they've been working toward and negotiating about for a while.

Well, if blink-182 has been signed for 15 years, they probably didn't have a 360 deal. So the label would most likely have seen nothing from their touring profits, besides CDs sold on the road.

I imagine the deal just ran out though.

Tom has been a staunch supporter of independence ever since he was able to get out of AVA's contract with Geffen. He has run that band in a self-sufficient manner for years... why exactly do people think Blink were dying to stay with an outdated business model when they have the clout, fanbase and money to do it all themselves?

Because they are a band that takes forever on everything.

I don't care how long they take if you have Blink 182, one of the hottest pop-punk bands around on your label, and they sell out tours wherever they go you don't drop them. That would be insane.

So? They told near 500K records of Neighborhoods. 7/10 major label records completely flop and the remaining pay for those flops. Doesn't matter how long it takes if it sells.

I doubt they got dropped. Incubus is also independent at the moment. Sony apparently offered them a very generous offer to stay on, but Incubus refused to re-sign with them. I expect the same happened with Blink 182.

Rumor has it the heads at Geffen dropped Blink because they thought Tom didn't look like he wanted to be there.

are they forever independent? or just until they find another label? will it cost them less to put out an album now or more seeing there will be a huge demand and theyd have to print so many copies themselves as well as promote?

I can def see a situation where they had to either negotiate a new deal, since they were still on their contract from the hiatus, or leave the label. So they decided to just leave the label. I feel like if they really desired being unsigned, they would have discussed it more during the recent push of the last album.

They were likely still under contract when they decided to come back, hence releasing Neighborhoods on Interscope.

Their overhead costs aren't as high now that they all have their own fully stocked studios. Obviously distributing a record independently is more complicated, but I imagine they'll just find a distributor and handle it that way.

Their contracted ended, the band did not renew.

I have a feeling they'll either sign to Tom's label To the Stars or start their own. Tom is very efficient at this kind of stuff judging from his work with AVA, so either way they should be fine.

They definitely were not dropped. Anyone remember the Billboard cover story? I also remember reading another article where someone from Interscope said that Neighborhoods sold more in its first week than the label thought it would and that they would like to continue to work with them.

"We're in the business of putting out Blink-182 albums, and . . . we're excited about the future now that they're back together," he says. Meanwhile, Hoppus doesn't express any displeasure with the band's label situation, and Barker says there weren't any "horror stories" involved with the release.

I believe they will be signing Mightier than Sword and are going to be dropping the long overdue Take Off Your Pants And Jacket record.

If blink-182 started a record label...i feel like every band from metalcore bands to pop bands would be on their nuts to sign them...i dont even want to imagine what all the cheesycore bands would do.

Whatever it is, it seems like they have it all planned out. I mean, from what we can see in social networks, Tom's never been more excited with blink, and we know how much he works when he's motivated with a project;

they'll probably start their own....but if they sign to epitaph, that label will have officially conquered the world haha

when does JEW's contract end? They've gotta get away from there and find a new home like...I dunno maybe ANTI? or Merge? Interscope is useless

They're a big enough band that they can hold things down on their own, or have the negotiating power to have other labels fighting over them. The way majors work and take cuts from every way possible, their old deal could have not been giving them their fair share.
