Macklemore Issues Statement on Teacher Suspension

Macklemore has issued a statement regarding the incident in Michigan where a middle school teacher was suspended for playing his song "Same Love" in the classroom. You can read his statement in the replies.

Macklemore Issues StatementI believe that Ms. Johnson getting suspended is completely out of line and unjust. However, I think it’s important for moments like these to be exposed and for us to pay attention and respond. This level of intolerance and fear is still very active in America, but at times is not completely visible. This incident is just one of tens of thousands that have happened across the country where schools have exposed a latent homophobia, preventing safe space for all young people to feel confident in being themselves. It’s clear that Ms. Johnson felt bullying and “gay bashing” were issues that needed to be addressed, and by doing so, was punished.
I wrote the song “Same Love,” not with the expectation that it would cure homophobia and lead to marriage equality across the US (although that’d be awesome). It was written with the hope that it would facilitate dialogue and through those conversations understanding and empathy would emerge. This incident demonstrates how too often we are quick to silence conversations that must be had. Even if people disagree, there is far more potential for progress when people are vocal and honestly expressing their thoughts about gay rights. When we are silent and avoid the issue, fear and hatred have a far greater life span.
It’s discouraging that a song about love and civil rights has led to a teacher getting suspended from her job. But that’s where we are at. For those of us who get a pit in our stomach when reading a story like this, it just makes it abundantly clear there is far more work to be done.

There's gotta be some sort of macro or whatever that whenever you post something it automatically changes your post to say, "Don't worry. I'm just trolling."

Probably the best thing to happen to this overrated rapper.

RonStoppable 11/29/12 04:20 PM

Macklemore's a good dude. Bummed the incident is connected to my state.

Charles777 11/29/12 04:43 PM

Good dude.

DisenShaanted 11/29/12 04:49 PM

I wonder if it would have been more acceptable to play Danny Brown's "I Will." How dare teachers progress with the times.

turningdrummer 11/29/12 05:07 PM

I played showed the video for "Make It Stop (September's Child)" by Rise Against to my Christian middle and high school students in chapel one time to show them the possible outcomes of their bullying. The uncomfortable silence after the video was quite telling.

movingxpictures 11/29/12 05:18 PM

Oh, public schools.

Great point. With his latest single only having 22 million views on youtube and his current tour almost entirely sold out, I'm sure Macklemore's first reaction to hearing this story was to thank his lucky charms that he's finally receiving some exposure.

This is America, you should be allowed to hate on whomever you want.

He said overrated, not underpaid. You may have strengthened his point.

correct. however, your hate should not completely inhibit another person's right to love. or, in this case, play a song in a classroom.

He was referring to the "best thing that could have happened" part.

Cool of him to respond to this. Disappointing to know that we are still dealing with stuff like this at this point in time.

blackmold 11/29/12 08:13 PM

Should've just said "Thanks for all the free publicity, bro!" You know that's what he's thinking.

What this guy said^^^

Don't think he is anything special. I feel like others do what he does way better. Only good thing about that album was the production.

hiya 11/29/12 09:47 PM

Really well written statement, we can only hope some good will come out of this situation.

They were probably all in shock in your shitty taste in music, I would be speechless too if you played rise against and actually thought it was good.

This is clearly a ploy by teachers unions to distort our perception of the good book so they can be overpaid to brainwash our children with these satan worshiping pagan ideas which destroy gods planet and cause hurricanes so they justify more public spending taking our hard earned tax dollars we could give to church on Sundays, all so they can corrupt our electoral process to expand their ability to march us to the gates of hell.
